NBD Nano raised $5.2 million in Series A funding Tuesday to take its durable surface coating tech to the next level.
Cambridge-based Phoenix Venture Partners led the round, with participation from Supply Chain Ventures and a number of angel investors. Previous investors include Boston Seed Capital and local angel Joe Caruso. The Boston College-spun company has raised $8.7 million in financing to date.
NBD Nano creates superhydrophobic surface coatings that can be used to enhance the condensation capabilities of industrial heat exchangers by a whopping 200 percent. The non-wetting coating can also be used to keep electronics and other consumer items, like the T-shirt above, safe from moisture.
The funding will be used to continue the development of the company's product and apply it to new industrial – and consumer – facing uses.
Back in 2012, the team took home the first place award in the Boston College Venture Competition. NBD Nano also participated in the fall 2012 Techstars class, alongside Boston startups CoachUp and Ovuline.
NBD Nano conducts its prototyping at Somerville cleantech incubator Greentown Labs and keep an office in Fenway.
