Mobile Video Editing Startup Directr Acquired By Google

Boston-born Directr was acquired by Google on Wednesday. The small business video editing startup will integrate into YouTube’s video ads division.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 2012, Directr raised a relatively small sum of $1.7 million.

“Our small band of scrappy film lovers set out 2 years ago to help regular folks make great video," wrote the company in a blog post. "Today, we are incredibly excited to take the next step on that journey and announce that we are joining the video ads team at YouTube."

The six-person startup, whose product was crowned one of the Best Apps of 2013 by Apple, allows individuals and small businesses to shoot and edit film on the go.

When Directr launched in 2012, the app targeted consumers. In late 2013, however, the startup pivoted and set its sights on startups and small businesses. Directr charged companies $25 a month to get full access to the point-and-shoot service, as well as “story boards” designed to aid users in creating video content for specific needs, like Kickstarter videos and  testimonials.

In the wake of the deal, Directr’s app will become free to all, and will stay available to the public – at least “for now,” according to the post.
