Forget the World Cup. On Thursday afternoon, startups and venture capital firms entered their finest and most mentally and physically fit into the ring at Boston’s 2nd Annual TUGG Entrepreneur Games.
More than 700 people participated in 32 challenges that tested mind and body at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, cheered on by the crowd. From darts to dizzy bat, limbo to long jump, teams duked it out to raise money for BUILD in Greater Boston, a nonprofit dedicated to providing big-thinking young people with the basic resources needed to start their own business, like entrepreneur and venture capital mentorship.
Last year, the Olympic-esque competition for a good cause raised $48,600 for BUILD. But this year, the Boston startup scene did the nonprofit one better. By the end of the event, a whopping $79,000 was raised.
Individuals from participating companies were divided into 10 country teams. While all participants played their hearts out, it was Vietnam that locked down the most victories, winning the coveted overall gold prize. The champion country was composed of players from HubSpot’s Signals team, Atlas Venture, clypd, Goldman Sachs, General Assembly and WeWork. Additional awards were also doled out to individual winners of each game.
The event was created by the collaborative minds of TUGG, Silicon Valley Bank, RaceMenu, Plastiq, Techstars, T3 Advisors, MassChallenge and the New England Venture Capital Association.
