Boston-born RailPod just raised $2.5 million in venture capital to make both railroad inspection and traveling by train safer, according to a new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The 2013 MassChallenge alumnus creates robotic track inspection systems for the railroad industry to ensure that tracks are safe for use. The “pods” give inspectors a visual of a set of tracks’ conditions, along with data to empower inspectors to identify track problems swiftly and accurately, remotely. The startup has the overall effect of minimizing inspectors’ time in the field and minimizing their dangerous exposure, while also empowering them to make the necessary maintenance to tracks.
At MassChallenge’s award ceremony last October, RailPod was dubbed one of the Seaport startup accelerator’s $100,000 Diamond winners. The company was founded in 2012 by Brendan English.
