Project 2020 Snags $1.2M, Plans to Launch Eyecare-On-Wheels Service in August

Eyecare-on-wheels startup Project 2020 snagged on Thursday $1.2 million in funding, reports the Boston Business Journal.

Based out of PayPal StartTank in Downtown Boston, the company plans to make the process of getting an eye exam easier by bringing a retro-fitted RV right to their place of work, cutting down the cost of time and productivity in the commute to and from the doctor’s office.

Project 2020 will partner with companies for free to provide the service as an added perk to employees. People will pay for eye exams per usual from the truck, either out of pocket or through health insurance. The startup aims to make money off of insurance reimbursements and co-payments.

A pair of technicians and a licensed opthomologist will be on board the van, which will contain a reception area, exam room along with retail area for shopping various frames. There will also be Google Glass on board for patients to toy around with as they wait.

Thursday’s chunk of newfound capital will come in handy when the company launches in the end of August. Project 2020 has about three dozen companies in Boston lined up to bring the service to their employees.

The company currently has a team of three person team, with its chairman being Bain Capital Ventures investor Howard Bornstein.
