Boston startup Quantopian, which breaks down Wall Street’s barriers to help math-minded quants become investors, made its browser-based algorithmic trading platform open to the public on Thursday.

The company, which raised $6.7 million in Series A from Khosla Ventures and Boston’s Spark Capital in October, has been hosting a closed pilot for the past four months. In that time, over 150 customers used Quantopian’s platform to trade real money. What’s more impressive, though, is that the startup’s platform saw over $100 million in trades, directed by hundreds of algorithms, in the month of May alone. Today, that startup claims its platform hosts more than $5 million in assets.

The start of the open beta means that any and all people eager to get trading “can use the secret weapon used by Wall Street” to tap into volumes of data, test strategies, emotional biases and more to try and spin a profit, according to the company.

Since the startup’s beta launch in the summer 2012, more than 20,000 quants have joined Quantopian’s e-trading community to share ideas and help peers refine their skills.

But though the company just hit a major milestone, Quantopian’s team is already looking forward to what’s next.

"I'm thrilled by the performance of our algorithmic investors and our platform in private pilot,” said Quantopian CEO John “Fawce” Fawcett in a statement. “I'm confident we are ready to delight investors from around the world in beta."

The startup is looking to add more tools like company data search and more brokerage connections, along with push to get beginners on board with the addition of low cost, low frequency strategies. The company is also exploring a no-code option for interested non-technical investors.
