Meet the Local Startupper Behind Boston's New Tech Blog 'For Normal People'

Kevin

There’s a new tech blog in town, scribed by a local startupper and self-described life-long lover of gadgets and follower of industry trends.

Put simply, KnowTechie is “a tech blog for normal people,” joked Kevin Raposo, the blog’s author and a content marketer for Cambridge company SimpliSafe.

A musician at heart, Raposo joined SimpliSafe almost three years ago as its sixth employee. “I saw an ad on Craiglist for a local startup, so I applied. When I walked in for the interview, I thought, ‘This is it, this is the world for me,’” Raposo told BostInno. Since then, the connected home security system company has grown to around 100 employees, and banked a jaw-dropping $57 million in May.

Raposo’s knowledge of the tech space was growing during that time, too. He rose from managing SEO and keywords to building SimpliSafe’s PR and content marketing efforts.

One day this spring, when Raposo’s friends were asking about the latest Android operating system, the idea for KnowTechie came to him. “I thought, ‘Why don’t I start a tech blog for people who like tech but aren’t in the industry, and who live outside the bubble?’”

It’s an endeavor independent of SimpliSafe, and kind of like a “Tech trends for Dummies.” Or, for that “old stoner high school friend,” writes Raposo in his introductory post:

Think of this as a tech blog for the local auto mechanic, one of your old stoner high school friends, or even the annoying co-worker. It’s a tech blog, for people who like tech, but don’t want to sign up for a Twitter account.

Therefore, it makes sense that the blog won’t be delving into local companies’ fundings or acquisitions. Rather, KnowTechie will cover tech, social media and consumer-facing innovations from locally-spun Boston startups, said Raposo, naturally naming alcohol delivery app Drizly as next on his list of stories. He’ll also be packaging must-read links from Slate, reddit, Vox, Engadget and the like in posts.

“I’ve always had a strong interest in tech, but it really took a nose dive when I joined SimpliSafe,” admitted Raposo.

And this is its fruition.
