In the next few days, thousands of twenty-somethings will don those traditional – and ugly – caps and gowns and hear the words of wisdom from renowned individuals and influencers, before going out into the big, bad working world in Boston or another thriving city. And work they must: While that freshly-inked degree may be worth $831,000, student loan rates remain sky-high. This means that the class of 2014 needs to find a steady paycheck or search for freelance jobs, stat.

While the secure 9-to-5 gig may be tough to come by, the Boston-area boasts a number of marketplace startups that are ideal for people hoping to keep their skills sharp or earn extra cash.

If you don’t have a degree yet, don’t worry. Many of the following freelance hubs award skills and experience over a full four years (or more, for graduate students) in the classroom. Freelancing is the perfect opportunity to add a few more bullet points on your resume and boost your skill set in a field you’re passionate about, or want to test out for a career switch.

Just picture yourself sipping cocktails – bought with your own, hard-earned money – on a rooftop somewhere in Boston. Sounds sublime, right? Take a look at the following at the following talent marketplaces that could turn that daydream into a reality.
