What to Watch in Boston Biz 4/28-5/2: Techstars Boston Demo Day & Boston Upfront



Boston tech is ending April with a bang this week. On Tuesday, Techstars Boston’s highly anticipated Demo Day will take place, showcasing its 12 startups’ progress over the past three months. The accelerator’s after party takes us right into Wednesday and BostInno’s own Boston Upfront, an event designed to spur a dialogue around what’s next for Boston in policy, education and innovation.

Monday 4/28

Brigham and Women’s Hospital: BWH iHub Pilot Shark Tank – Healthtech startups and hackers will crowd into Brigham and Women’s Hospital this afternoon to demo their proposed solutions to the center’s clinical partners. The goal of the new event is to match early stage companies and their products and services with the real challenges, as discerned by BWH, facing the clinical practices as a whole.

Drinks on Tap – Looking to start your week of the social way? Head to Ned Devine’s tonight at 6 p.m. to grab a beer and catch up on the new mobile happenings in Boston. The apps demoing at this week’s meetup are as follows: Crittercism, Cannonball, Breeze and CanOpener.

Women in the Workforce: How do you reach the top? MassTLC rounded up a number of leading women innovators to speak to what it means to be a businesswomen tonight in the Seaport. Sitting on the panel of speakers are: Danielle Duplin, Fidelity Investments and TEDx; Trish Fontanilla, Vsnap; Elizabeth G. Rocco, PHT Corporation; Amy Villeneuve, Kiva Systems. Tuesday 4/29

Techstars Boston Demo DayTechstars’ 12 teams will take to the stage on Tuesday to show their progress over the past three months of tireless work. Past demo days have seen the likes of David “Big Papi” Ortiz, and showcased companies that have gone to raise millions in funding. What will this batch bring to the table? Doors open at 9 a.m., and presentations will start at 9:25, followed by an early afternoon of networking. But be sure to swing by Storyville from 7 to 10:30 p.m. for the After Party!

#ThinkFWD Boston presents The Future of TalentFWD.us’s Boston chapter will launch a series of national panel discussions featuring experts from the tech and policy ecosystem in town. The program will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and will feature panelists Andrew McAfee, the associate director of the Center for Digital Business at the MIT Sloan School of Management; Ed Glaeser, a renowned economics professor at Harvard; and Dan Koh, the Chief of Staff to Mayor Marty Walsh.

Launch Academy Career Day – Looking for some fresh development talent? Launch Academy will open its doors on Tuesday and Wednesday to companies in need of Ruby developers. After months of training, the intensive developer training course’s 35 “launchers” are seeking full-time positions as junior web developers. Come see what they’ve learned, starting at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Enterprise Forum Cambridge: Healthcare Innovation After Obamacare – In this month’s innovation series event, the folks at Enterprise Forum Cambridge will host a conversation around what technologies need to be brought into the healthcare space in the wake of the Affordable Care Act. The organization has brought together a number of impressive local speakers from all areas of the industry, including Techstars’ alum PillPack and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Stop by the Broad Institute at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday to learn more.

BostInno presents Boston Upfront – On Wednesday, Streetwise Media will host Boston Upfront, a one-of-a-kind event featuring an exclusive 45-minute screening on Boston’s ‘new economy.’ Examining the fields of policy, education and innovation, the event will foster a dialogue among the city’s top influencers – and yourself – on what is next for the city of Boston. MassTLC: Big Data Summit: You Have Data, Now What? – Big Data has become mainstream. ProductCamp Boston – ProductCamp Boston is a “unconference,” designed specifically for product managers and product marketers in the local business ecosystem.
