Few things compare to the delight of chowing down on some dip with a handful of freshly-opened, salty potato chips ... made with cricket flour.
Six Foods, a Harvard-spun startup that aims to preserve the world's sources by baking with insects, will host a party tonight in honor of the launch of its Kickstarter.
We wrote about the startup last month, profiling Six Foods's inception and its mission to get humans over the psychological hump of eating bugs by baking them into delectable snacks. Now, the team is ready to take its goodies to the public, starting with Tuesday's bash and coupled with a $30,000 crowdfunding campaign.
"We decided to go with Kickstarter because this isn't a normal business; we are starting a movement to change people's minds about eating insects. Kickstarter is the perfect way to reach people directly and have them join us!" SixFoods' cofounder Laura D'Asaro told BostInno over email.
... And yes, the aforementioned chips – er, we mean "chirps" – will be available at the event, held at NGIN, a new internationally-focused coworking space in the heart of Kendall Square. According to D'Asaro, the gluten-free, salty snacks have three times the protein and half the fat of a normal potato chip.
The chirps are among the first foods that the company hopes to take to manufacturing with the funds raised to from the Kickstarter.
Also on the menu, prepared by the culinary prowess of Sofra Bakery's head chef Geoff Lucas (and Six Foods' advisor) are cricket sushi, mealworm arancini and honeybug tacos, along with chocolate chirp cookies for dessert and a champagne toast.
Bugs don't sound half bad now, do they?
