The 118th Boston Marathon is right around the corner, and the local tech community is prepared to show its support for the city and victims after last year’s tragic events in the mode entrepreneurs know best: innovation. On April 18 and 19, Intrepid Pursuits will host a Give Back for Boston hackathon to pay tribute to those affected by the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.
Designers, developers and tech-focused folks will cram into the Kendall Square-based mobile design shop for a 26.2-hour sprint to starting up. And considering the marathon is the hackathon’s muse, it makes sense that participants will be armed with years of Boston Marathon data and tasked with creating a marathon-related app, or one that aims to benefit Bostonians as a whole.
The event will kick off on Friday, April 18, with some light mingling and drinks at 4 p.m. before teams break off and begin to spin their ideas into realities. Come Saturday at 4 p.m., groups will present their pitches to a panel of talented judges, which includes Mark Kasdorf of Intrepid Pursuits, Smith Anderson of Silicon Valley Bank, Dave Bisceglia of TapLab, Seth Sivak of Proletariat and Streetwise Media's own Greg Gomer.
After judges’ deliberation, the project standing in first place will receive $2,000. Second- and third-place winners will also receive cash and in-kind prizes. But the most exciting gift given will be a check worth $1,000, granted to The One Fund.
Innovation on all levels push us toward the future. This forward-thinking mindset, by way of Intrepid Pursuit’s hackathon, sheds a thoughtful yet thrilling light on the Marathon. While the memory of last year’s race lives on in the hearts and minds of people around the world, the prospect of this year’s race brings forth a sentiment of new beginnings, as well as new ideas.
