What to Watch in Boston Biz 4/7-4/13: TechCrunch Meetup, How Startups Get Their First Customers, PAX East

At long last, spring seems to have finally sprung in our fair corner of New England. There's no better time to get out and about then this week. While this week's list of meetups and events is a bit shorter than usual, start thinking quality over quantity. Get organized and kick start your spring cleaning, Boston!

Monday 4/7

Tufts $100K New Ventures Competition and 10th Anniversary Celebration – Tufts will open its doors this afternoon for a showcase of twelve student- and alumni-started companies in honor of the university’s 10-year anniversary. The two-day event begins today with a networking lunch and the $100K finalists’ startup pitches. Come Tuesday evening, the anniversary celebration will be in full swing, kicking off with opening remarks from President Monaco, followed by a keynote address from the Boston Globe’s Scott Kirsner.

Tuesday 4/8

Boston TechBreakfast – Break bagels and get your caffeine fix with fellow techies at this month’s TechBreakfast, held at the Microsoft NERD Center. You’ll get the chance to chat with, and learn from, fellow developers, designers and entrepreneurs.

TechCrunch: Boston Meetup – Investors, entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts will funnel into Royale on Tuesday for TechCrunch’s meetup and pitch-off event. The lucky startups will present their rapid-fire 60-second positions in hopes of impressing a handful of judges, including TechCrunch writers and local investors. The winning company will receive a table in Start Up Alley at the upcoming TechCrunch Disrupt, while the second and third place startups will score tickets to said event.

Wednesday 4/9

Mass. Innovation Nights – Ten companies will bring their ideas on the table Wednesday night at this month’s Innovation Night. The meetup begins at 6:00 p.m., and startup pitches kick off at 7:00 p.m.

Thursday 4/10

How Startups Get Their First Customers – Curious as to how fledgling companies bring in users? Come down to WeWork’s Seaport building on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to learn how to reel in customers. Speakers include Elizabeth Morrow, Founder of Yoga By Numbers, Mike Brown, Co-Founder of Alpine Hammock, and Sam Barstow, Co-Founder of Forsake Shoes.

Babson B.E.T.A. Challenge Finals – There are plenty of companies to pitch and checks to write this Thursday at Babson’s B.E.T.A. Challenge. Some of the nation's top entrepreneurship students and alumni will present their ventures in the hopes of taking home $20,000 in cash and and in-kind donations. Take a look at the six student created businesses in the undergraduate, graduate and alumni categories here.

Friday 4/11

PAX East – Gaming enthusiasts will converge on the Boston Convention and Expo Center this Friday to test drive the latest video and computer games on the market. With thousands of attendees every year, it’s no wonder that PAX East stands as the second largest gaming event in North America. Nab your tickets now to ensure you get entry to the event.

Saturday & Sunday 4/12 - 4/13

Ship It! Saturday – Immersive coding school Launch Academy invites you to head down to its Chinatown ‘Mission Control’ to take part in an eight-hour long hackathon. Prizes will be awarded to the top three applications launched. Mentors will be on-hand to provide advice and guidance throughout the day, which begins at 9 a.m. with a donut breakfast.
