California-based mobile payment company Cortex MCP has plans to set up an office in the Cambridge Innovation Center. The start might have as many as ten employees in town by the end of 2014, reports BetaBoston.
Rather than hosting its own mobile wallet, Cortex MCP offers up its hassle-free technology to other payment companies to embed in their own applications. Using Cortex's tech, merchants can offer targeted deals to consumers depending on how much they indicate they are willing to spend for an item. Consumers can then set a geographic radius in which they want to receive deals, and nearby retailers can send them notifications offering up bargains.
Heading up the Boston area office will be Rob Stringer, Cortex's vice president of product development. The company has hopes of hiring people for software engineering, quality assurance and marketing positions.
Cortex, started in 2012, currently employees around 30. Interestingly, a few members of the company's founding team hails from Boston-based mobile payments tech company ROAM Data. According to the report, the company is currently in the process of raising a Series A round.
In addition to ROAM, Cortex joins the ranks of LevelUp and Leaf, which recently added three top executives and expanded its services, in the pocket of payment companies in the Boston area.
