What to Watch in Boston Biz: Women's Leadership Forum, Xconomy Mobile Madness & Boston Design Week



Good thing it’s St. Patrick’s Day, because you’re going to need a little luck of the Irish to keep up with all of these events, conferences and meetups this week. Fight through that hangover and get ready for the next five, jam-packed days – and, if you’re one of these three companies throwing a Paddy’s party, another few servings of green beer and snacks, too.

Monday 3/17

Intelligent.ly: Back to Basics: Financial Fundamentals – Think you’ve bit off more than you can chew with your startup’s business model? In this session, Silicon Valley Bank can teach the fundamentals of financial principles, from flow statements to balance sheets, that every startup will have to contend with. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. tonight!

Tuesday 3/18

MITX Up – MITX Up plays matchmaker between pre-screened startups, and marketing and communications mentors to give companies a head start in marketing their business. On Tuesday, the organization is teaming up to host its marketing hackathon with Techstars and is calling out to MITX members to join the team of marketing mentors!

Designers + Geeks: Boston Social Mixer – Love tech, art and startups? Head over to Cambridge Brewing Co. in Kendall Square to network with other designers (and self-proclaimed geeks) to make collaborations as well as new friends.

Tech in Motion 2014: The Year of the Tech War on Talent – What do managers really look for when they’re making hires? Three local firms – Tayjoy, Sapient and Jobspring Partners – will break down the highs and lows of hiring for the crowd. Stop by the Microsoft NERD Center to witness the conversation at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday 3/19

The Ad Club’s Women’s Leadership Forum – Every year, The Ad Club invites notable female leaders to speak at this conference exploring what makes a great woman. The half day conference this year features a talented group of female speakers, each with a myriad of accomplishments to their name. Read more on the event here.

Xconomy Mobile Madness 2014: The Next Disruptors – Tech news site Xconomy seeks to reveal which players are disrupting their fields and industries via mobile in this half day conference. A slew of top notch local speakers – RunKeeper’s Jason Jacobs and Crashlytics’s Wayne Chang, among them – are lined up to share their personal stories and mobile strategies across industries, from healthcare care to consumer apps to finance. the program begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Microsoft NERD Center.

Google: Women Techmakers – In conjunction with International Women’s Day on March 8th, Google is partnering with Women Techmakers to launch a series of events and meetups geared towards increasing visibility, community and resources for talented, technical women in business and technology-facing industries. Head over to Google’s Cambridge office on Wednesday to get in on the conversation!

Dyn Delivers March Madness – Join Dyn and friends at The Greatest Bar to kick off March Madness right. In other words with games, beers, snacks and prizes!

A Better City: Challenge for Sustainability Awards – Over 100 of Boston’s largest buildings and employers will come together at the New England Aquarium to honor and celebrate their accomplishments at A Better City’s 5th Annual Challenge for Sustainability Awards. Stay tuned as Award Winners are announced for their shared success in making the world a greener place on Thursday!

The First Annual Boston Design Week – Thursday kicks off the first-ever Design Week in Boston, a 10-day citywide festival dedicated to celebrating and increasing awareness for the arts and design, with over 80 events spanning the entire city of Boston. The festival begins this Thursday with the ASID Annual Awards Gala at the Mandarin Hotel, and will conclude with the 7th Annual AD20/21: Art & Design of the 20th & 21st Centuries show March 27th through 30th at The Cyclorama in the South End.

Music Tech Fest: Boston – Music Tech Fest claims to unite the “the entire music technology ecosystem under one roof – from the big guys in the music industry and media, music tech startups and apps creators, to developers, artists, performers, researchers, creatives and hackers.” And on Friday, the organization will do just that in Beantown at the Microsoft Nerd Center.

Saturday & Sunday 3/22-3/23

Compass Climb-A-Thon at Brooklyn Boulders – Join the Boston Region of the Compass Fellowship this weekend for an evening of rock climbing at Somerville’s Brooklyn Boulders. Shell out the $20 for a ticket, and you’ll get dinner (from Flatbread’s Pizza and Anna’s Tacqueria), unlimited climbing and the chance to meet fellow young entrepreneurs.

The 37 Billion Mile Challenge Datathon – Love numbers and can’t get enough data? Head down to District Hall come Saturday for this weekend-long Challenge Datathon, a daylong event focused on building programming, design and data analysis skills, where participants will have the opportunity to create teams, gain insights from mentors. The goal of the weekend, hosted by The Metropolitan Area Planning Council , Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, is to hack away at the 37 Billion Mile Data Challenge is to use the wealth of public transit data to build a more efficient, more effective and more sustainable public transportation system.

Mashable’s MashHacks: Travel Hackathon, presented by Emirates Airline – With KAYAK and TripAdvisor born in town, suffice to say that Boston has a steeped history of travel tech. On Saturday, programmers, designers and techies alike will convene at Cambridge’s hack/reduce to create the next big travel app. Tech news site Mashable will be doling out snacks and prizes (and, of course, caffeine) throughout the weekend. Do well, and you’ll be mentioned in a Mashable post announcing the winners the coming week!
