Tech Evolution: The Biggest Advancements Over 20 Years

Over the past two decades, we’ve witnessed countless innovations crop up. From the birth of Google to Facebook to the dawn of the smartphone era, new technology has altered and overall enhanced our day-to-day lives. Dogged entrepreneurs on both coasts of the country, and across the world, continue to iterate upon current systems, pushing our progress forward.

We have no shortage of brilliant and budding entrepreneurs in Boston. And fortunately, from 1993 to 2013, we have had a mayor that understands how to nurture the city’s innovation community. In the course of his tenure, Mayor Thomas Menino has paid close attention to needs of innovators and their institutions, striving for the shared goal of making Boston the top destination for businesses and entrepreneurs from around the world.

The outgoing mayor closed the curtain on 20-year span in office with one final step forward for Boston tech: the creation of District Hall, the country’s first public innovation center, designed to bring together entrepreneurs and startups from all corners of the city.

To honor all that Mayor Menino has done to propel the innovation community forward, we took a look back at the evolution of technology since his mayorship. While we could not include all the advancements, we have rounded up dozens of devices, companies and services that were born from 1993 to 2013.
