What to Watch in Boston Biz 11/18: Techies Got Talent, Crimson on Cardinal Startup Throwdown & The Ultimate Developer Event



The holidays are right around the corner, which can only mean one thing: Crunchtime. Over the course of the next few weeks, you’ll be busy clocking some extra hours at work, so that when Thanksgiving rolls around next Thursday, you’ll be able to kick back with the fam, put your feet up and turn on the tube for some post-feast football. Pencil in one or two of this week’s meetups to ensure you don’t let anything slip during the seasonal craze.

Monday 11/18

General Assembly: Creating Video Content – Kick off your week by participating in this General Assembly class geared towards helping entrepreneurs create simple, original video content. Come to the class at 6:30 p.m. today, and you’ll walk out with a deeper understanding of how to select different types of video and produce quality video on a budget, as well as what equipment to purchase and which communication principles are key to every success video.

How Office Design Influences Culture Meetup – Company culture is a hard to define yet hot topic in the innovation ecosystem these days; it’s about time someone broke down what it all means. On Tuesday, Jon Firsch of T3 Advisors, Sidi Gomes of CIC and Vince Pan of Analogue Studio, will come together to share their opinions on how culture is best realized within a startup’s office design to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.

#TechTuesdays – Started by the Privy crew, #TechTuesdays are all about bringing startup folk, techies and innovators together to eat, drink and be merry. Co-Founders Wanted of Boston – Dying to find that startup soulmate with whom to start your business? Head over to MassChallenge this Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. to network with a batch of like-minded Bostonians.

Boston Music Tech: Demo. Teach. Learn. Meet. Eat. – This event strikes the sweet spot for musicians and techies alike. Come to the Venture Café for demos from a handful of startups, mixing and mingling with the group’s network, as well as a collaborative live performance and product demo from Wiggz and David Day from mmmMaven. And did we mention there's free pizza?

Techies Got Talent – Got some sweet unicycle skills? Can you bust a rhyme with the best of the best of them? On Wednesday evening Boston innovators will head down to the Hard Rock Café to show off their secret skills for the second-ever Techies Got Talent competition. All proceeds will go towards TUGG portfolio non-profit, Music & Youth. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m.!

Thursday 11/21

Xconomy Forum: D-Squared – The Future of Data and DevicesStarting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Xconomy will set up shop at the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology to inspire a conversation on the ever-expanding field of “big data.” The discussion will include big data's key sectors that are winning both mindshare and investment dollars, like product design and development in the cloud, connected devices, and hardware for health, energy and social applications. The event offers a slew of expert speakers from Boston and beyond, so it's certainly not an afternoon to miss.

MIT Entrepreneurship Throwdown: Crimson on Cardinal Startup Throwdown – Which Ivy university pumps out the best innovators? Entrepreneurs from Harvard and MIT will go head to head Thursday pitching their companies to the audience, which will be full of some of New England’s top investors, entrepreneurs and media, all of whom will cast their votes for the best business idea. The Boston Globe’s Scott Kirsner will moderate the event, which is set to feature MIT startups Melange, ecoVent, and Revivo, and SQ Technologies,  Six Foods and Kartis from Harvard.

Why Early Advocates are 10x More Important Than Early Adopters of New Products – Held in Waltham at Constant Contact’s headquarters, this meetup will delve into the ways in which you can cultivate early advocates – a special type of early adopter – to help spread the word about and refine your product.

The Ultimate Developer Event – End your week strong at this brand new conference dedicated to bringing together all types of developers for three days of inspiration, networking and education. The event’s sessions are structured around four tracks: startups, APIs, Web Apps and mobile. Pick one, or dabble in a few to customize the event to your developer needs.

Saturday & Sunday 11/23

General Assembly: Essentials of Startup Law – Learn about key legal issues that startups face during their initial years of growth, including corporate foundation, fundraising documentation, founders’ stock and board formation. Over the course of three sessions, you’ll deepen your understanding of the legalities surrounding company formation, fundraising alternatives, term sheets and corporate governance.
