What to Watch in Boston Biz, 10/14/13: FutureM, Vermont Tech Jam & Crowdfunding Weekend

Monday’s here, but so is Columbus Day, meaning many of us can sleep in, max and relax all in the good name of Christopher and the whole in-1492-ocean-blue situation. To help you bask in that weekend glow a little longer, we have rounded up this week’s happenings in Boston’s business and tech community. Guiltlessly hit snooze today, become one with your couch and give your old networking cal a rest this week. We've got you covered.

Monday 10/14

Not much is happening in the Hub today given the holiday; however, BostInno got word that members of Communispace have plans to shake things up by “blowing up take your kids to work day.” The consumer insights company is inviting their employees to bring in their kids, ages two to 14, to rule the roost and participate in a ton of different activities meant to inspire them about the working world.

Tuesday 10/15

Innovation Series Event: A Next Wave of Innovation with Dharmesh Shah, CTO, Hubspot – Serial entrepreneur Yoav Shapira will take the mic interviewing HubSpot Co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah on what makes a modern startup successful. Dharmesh will discuss what he calls "culture code"–in other words, the values and beliefs within the workplace that drive a company's success. Roll up to the MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., if you’re interested in starting a company or making your current company culture more startup–oriented: innovative, faster-moving and agile.

Wednesday 10/16

MITX’s FutureM, Day 1 – This week features MITX’s annual three-day event dedicated to exploring the intersections of innovation in marketing and technology. FutureM has too many notable speakers and cutting-edge sessions to list, but some standouts from Wednesday’s schedule will be:

  • "Social + Analytics: Does Social Media Opinion Matter?"– speakers from Disney, Berndale, Edelman Digital and Crimson Hexagon
  • "Product Experience + Marketing= The Key to Unlocking Customer Engagement"–representatives of Adelphic, Brightcove, Constant Contact and Fresh Tilled Soil
  • "Find Your Golden Thread" – Jim Speros, EVP of Fidelity Communications and Advertising
  • "Building to Learn with Art, Copy and Code"– Aman Govil, Head of Advertising Arts Team at Google

Thursday 10/17

MITX’s FutureM, Day 2 – Head to the Hynes Convention Center bright and early at 8:30 a.m. to hear from Umang Shah, director of social strategy at Walmart, who will be giving attendees the scoop on smarter social media strategies. Then schmooze and snack until noon, when Anita Elberse, a professor of Harvard Business School, delivers her talk on "Blockbusters: Hit-making, Risk-taking and the Big Business of Entertainment."

Boston Future 4 Reception & After-Party – This fall, DigitasLBi, Arnold World Wide, Mullen, Hill Holliday and Allen + Gerritsen teamed up to help one lucky local startup score free marketing campaigns from the city’s best and brightest ad talent. Four young Boston companies have been selected to give their most creative, non-cookie cutter pitches to the crowd along with a panel of judges. Once the winning startup is selected, bottles will pop and the evening’s celebrations will begin. The event is held in association with FutureM, so stick around Boylston after the sessions on Thursday to check it out.

Cleantech Open Northeast 2013 Innovation Expo and Awards Gala – Held at the Boston University School of Management, the Cleantech Open will kick off at 3:30 p.m. with an Innovation Showcase featuring 33 semifinalist startups from the regional accelerator's program. Soon after, the talented and seasoned judging panel will select the lucky winners.

Friday 10/18

MITX’s FutureM, Day 3 – Didn’t get enough of Dharmesh Shah earlier this week at the Innovation Series Event? Neither did we. Hubspot’s CTO and co-founder will speak at 1:15 p.m. on "From Madison Ave to MIT: The Tectonic Shift in Marketing Technology" to close down this year’s Future M conference.

Vermont Tech Jam – Bundle up and head out to Burlington this weekend to attend the state’s annual job fair and tech expo. There are typically more than 70 exhibitors, including Dealer.com and MyWebGrocer, posting up looking for new employees, along with numerous speakers from the University of Vermont and New England business and tech community. Boston had a killer tech jam the other week, so we say, the more tech jam the better! The event will rage on from Friday at 10:15 a.m. until Saturday afternoon.

Providence Startup Weekend – Friday marks the first day in our New England neighbor’s 54-hour event. Students, professionals and startups will flock to Betaspring in (surprise, surprise...) Providence to mingle, pitch ideas, team up and receive feedback.

Saturday 10/19

Hacking Pediatrics – Passionate about medicine, tech and innovation? Come over to Boston’s Children’s Hospital to help brainstorm solutions to the health and wellness issues facing children each day.

Crowdfunding Weekend at The Grommet – One of Somerville’s hottest startups, The Grommet, will invite entrepreneurs and young companies into its space this Saturday at 8 a.m. to participate in a workshop designed to give participants the skills they need to launch their own crowdfunding campaigns. Over the event’s 12 hours, workshoppers will build out their own crowdfunding campaigns, create catchy pitch videos and develop a marketing plan and ready, set, launch the campaign over a platform, like Kickstarter, IndieGoGo or Crowd Supply.
