Whenever a new device hits the market, tech fanatics start to scope out its hot, compatible accessories.
Mere moments after the debut of the iPhone 5C on Tuesday, Matter.io, a Cambridge 3D modeling, editing and printing software startup, made available an online tool dubbed iPhone Remix that enables avid techies to customize and save case designs for the newest member of Apple product family, reports Boston Business Journal.
Site visitors have the option of choosing between four different 5C cases as their base. Then, they can experiment with the easy-to-use 3D software to play around with colors, put on a layer of texture, add text and select either a matte or a ceramic luster.
"From there, designs can be freely downloaded, distributed and 3D printed on a home 3D printer or at online services like Shapeways.com," said the company to BBJ.
But don't get too excited just yet: the cases may not fit perfectly without the actual phone to work off of, but the good people over at Matter.io will "be doing everything they can to adjust the dimensions as new information becomes available and encourages the community to do the same with the freely distributed designs."
Co-founder and CEO Dylan Reid told BBJ that Matter.io created the tool to give users a taste of its 3D software, which they hope will make 3D printing more accessible. Matter.io plans to launch its first product, MatterRemix, this fall, which the startup claims will be "as easy as applying a photo filter."
The company certainly found a creative way to capitalize on Apple's news while also prepping the public for their own upcoming announcement.
