With winter storm Nemo burying Boston, you’re bound to be stuck indoors, bundled up, for a majority of the weekend. That said, there’s no better time to dust off your résumé, polish your pitch and prepare for MIT StartLabs’ Startup Career Fair on Monday.
StartLabs was founded out of a need to connect students with the startups around them and attract those startups to campus. Through various events, such as their annual Startup Bootcamp and Startup Career Fair, the student-run organization has been able to guide fellow students through entrepreneurship from start to finish.
Kicking off at 5 p.m. in the MIT Media Lab, nearly 50 companies, including HubSpot, Acquia, Crashlytics and Udacity, will be tabling, looking for new interns or student hires. This Career Fair, however, won’t be just any old traditional event.
“I get a little bored by the tables and rows,” says StartLabs board member Delian Asparouhov, who recently interned at Square. “Booths and rows feel much more stuffy and corporate, and that’s not what I think of when I think Square and Twitter.”
To liven the festivities up, the event will run more like a state fair, featuring caramel apples, popcorn and even a bouncy castle
StartLabs Co-Founder Ariadne Smith once said, working at a startup is one “of the most creative and stimulating things a person can do.” So why not highlight that by throwing a state fair in the MIT Media Lab?
Asparouhov says he hopes students will walk in with an idea and see a company presenting who has one similar. “I hope [the event] gets people to work at that startup or start pushing their idea immediately,” he admits.
Around 500 MIT students are expected to attend the fair, so be sure to read the founders’ advice on what they’re looking for in new student hires before showing up. That way, you can be guaranteed to stand out.
