It’s no surprise that, here at BostInno, we’re constantly celebrating how innovative this city is. We’ll be the first to gush about companies here in the Hub -- but can you blame us? After all, USA TODAY just asked the National Venture Capital Association which cities were the best for tech startups and Boston ranked number two.
San Francisco did rank number one, but before we get into the tiring battle of “which coast is the best coast,” USA TODAY explains by writing, “Seven of the top 10 most-viewed websites are based [in Silicon Valley], including Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Ask.” That’s a lot to contend with, but Boston has stepped up to the challenge.
When talking about Boston, USA TODAY said:
Harvard and MIT students get scooped up to work for firms in Boston and Cambridge, but there's more. "We have over 100 colleges here and five of the top teaching hospitals," says Douglas Cole, a partner at Flagship Ventures. The biggest local commercial websites are travel-related TripAdvisor and Kayak, which Spark Capital partner Bijan Sabet notes have a combined market cap of more than $6 billion. Startups include online backup service Carbonite and ByteLight, an indoor GPS service. "The local angel investing market has never been stronger," and the venture investing market is aggressive, says Sabet, an early investor in Twitter.
All of this is music to our ears.
Rounding out the top 10 cities, behind San Francisco and Boston are: New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago, Austin, Boulder/Denver and Seattle.
For anyone who does want to play the never-ending East Coast/West Coast game, however, let us just remind you Boston was ranked the #1 Most Innovative City in the World. Just sayin’.
