MIT spinoff Spyce, which runs a robotic kitchen in Downtown Boston, is the latest company to announce layoffs as the effects of coronavirus disruption trickle down to the startup economy.

In an email to BostInno, Spyce spokesperson Grace Uvezian confirmed that the company laid off four members in its engineering and operations teams. Spyce now has a headcount of 30.

"Like many other restaurant companies, we're learning how to navigate and adapt to a new reality for the foreseeable future," Uvezian said. "Unfortunately, we've had to make some very tough decisions around how we're allocating our resources. We do not have any plans to cut any other positions at Spyce."

As COVID-19-related unemployment mounts, Spyce joins local hospitality companies including ezCater, Toast, corporate-catering startup Alchemista and Bevi in announcing layoffs.

Spyce was founded by four MIT grads Michael Farid, Kale Rogers, Luke Schlueter and Brady Knight in 2015. It raised $21 million in a Series A financing round in 2018.
