Artificial Intelligence is Here to Stay, But So are Humans

If 2018 was any indication of what the job market will look like in the coming year, there are three key takeaways: artificial intelligence will take over most industries; robots will not replace the power of humans and soft skills sell hard.

In its 'U.S. Emerging Jobs Report for 2018,' LinkedIn pointed out that six out of the 15 emerging jobs are related in some way to AI, and research shows that skills related to this field are infiltrating every industry beyond tech. On LinkedIn, AI skills saw a 190 percent increase from 2015 to 2017.

Interestingly enough, this doesn't mean that robots and machine learning will take over human jobs - in fact, quite the opposite. These skills, although fast-growing, are creating a need for soft skills like oral communication, leadership, time management and people management. How this translates to hiring is that jobs for roles including administrative assistants, assurance staff and relationship consultant saw high growth.

"There is no doubt that AI skills are on the rise, but some typically human skills that today cannot be replicated by machines have been growing almost as fast and are here to stay," the report stated.

Blockchain developer, machine learning engineer, application sales executive, machine learning specialist and professional medical representative are jobs that have highest demand across the country.

Looking closer home, top three emerging jobs that are in high demand in Boston include:

  • Application Sales Executive (8X growth)
  • Assurance Staff (5X growth)
  • Administrative Assistant (4X growth)

Skills that are in high demand in Boston include:

  • Oral communication (public speaking, communication, presentation skills)
  • Business management (management, strategic planning, business process improvement)
  • Data Science (data analysis, forecasting, statistics)

A bustling tech center like Boston’s thrives thanks to a global workforce — migration has become emblematic of the startup economy we live in. In a recent report, Beantown ranked No. 1 city for job opportunities and growth.
