RoadBotics, a startup that spun out of Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute in 2016, raised a seed round of $3.9 million from Boston-based Hyperplane Ventures.
As part of the round, the company plans to build a sales presence in Boston to serve its dozen customers in the New England region.
The two-year-old startup headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA uses deep learning to develop advanced computer vision technology for inspecting roads and infrastructure across 78 cities across U.S. and Australia. This is pertinent in the autonomous vehicles sector that uses machine learning-based image processing to assess roads for self-driving cars.
It works like this: Roadbotics collects data through its proprietary smartphone app through a phone placed on the windshield of the car. The images uploaded on the company's platform assess the road's condition and give a rating that is then uploaded to its mapping platform. The company's clientele includes engineering firms and local governments including the City of Savannah.
The company will use the proceeds to build its technology platform and for customer outreach.
