BostInno Departed: Boston Startups That Were Acquired or Shut Down in May

Two big cybersecurity deals happened in the Boston area this month, with Microsoft reportedly buying Hexadite for $100 million and CyberArk confirming it has acquired Conjur for $42 million. One of the other big May deals was the private equity acquisition of SmartBear Software, which was reportedly sold for $410 million.

On the flip side, it appears that no startups have shut down this month. But who knows: there's a couple days left on the calendar, and another company could pull a move like Bridj did in April and make an announcement last minute.

The Shuttered:

As far as we could tell, no startups shut down in May.

The Merged and Acquired:

Conjur, a Newton-based cybersecurity startup, has been acquired by CyberArk, a publicly traded cybersecurity startup also in Newton, for $42 million. Concur had raised at least $2.6 million. Investors included Avalon Ventures and angel investor and Tamr CEO Andy Palmer.

Hexadite, a Boston-based provider of security automation software, is getting acquired by Microsoft for $100 million, according to Israeli business news site Calcalist. Founded in 2014, Hexadite produces AI-powered software to investigate online threats, rate the seriousness of alerts and provide an automated response. A Microsoft salesperson said, “we have nothing to share at this time.”

• HubLogix Commerce Corp. was acquired by ChannelAdvisor Corp., an e-commerce software developer based in North Carolina, for an undisclosed amount. Triangle Business Journal reported that ChannelAdvisor expects to retain HubLogix's 11 employees.

MustBin, a mobile app for organizing personal data, has agreed to sell its assets to Mountain View, Calif.,-based “digital vault” startup LifeSite. No MustBin employees will be joining LifeSite. The mobile app company was founded in 2012 by Brian Shin, the founder and former CEO of Visible Measures. Visible Measures sold to AcuityAds for $10 million earlier this year.

• Nutonian, a Boston-based big data startup, has been acquired by DataRobot, another local company that works in a similar space. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. DataRobot CEO Jeremy Achin told Fortune that the acquisition accelerates the company's movement into processing "time series" data — things like the minute-by-minute movements of a stock ticker — and doubles its market opportunity.

• Quickhelp, a startup we dubbed the “Uber for tutoring,” has been acquired by San Francisco edtech startup Yup. Terms were not disclosed. Read more about the acquisition here.

• SmartBear Software, which produces software quality tools for teams, was acquired by Francisco Partners. No financial terms were disclosed, but Xconomy reported that the deal was for $410 million. According to Xconomy, “SmartBear Software was formed a few years ago in a merger of three companies — Automated QA, Pragmatic Software and SmartBear — which “was a private equity roll-up led by Insight Venture Partners, SmartBear’s lead investor.”

• TapWalk, which provides mobile development services for venues, was acquired by fellow MassChallenge alum RaceMenu, a maker of software for endurance event organizers. With the acquisition, TapWalk founder David Owens will join the company to lead development of RacedayPRO, its new business-to-consumer mobile payments app for event organizers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

TriCore Solutions, a Norwell-based software company, has agreed to be acquired by Rackspace, a Texas-based cloud computing firm, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition, which is Rackspace's largest yet, is expected to close in June. TriCore's software helps companies manage enterprise applications.

• Unigma, a Framingham-based startup, has been acquired by Waltham-based Kaseya for an undisclosed amount. Unigma's software helps IT organizations simplify workloads in Amazon Web Services and other cloud services. Unigma will remain an independent Kaseya company with Kirill Bensonoff serving as CEO and as product manager.
