Are you going to be hopelessly alone again this Valentine's Day? There, there: It's not your fault. It's our city's.
Trulia, an online repository for real estate listings and housing data, recently went to town on U.S. Census data and broke down the dating pools within 100 of the largest U.S. metro areas. In its report Where to Live and Let Love Find You and an accompanying quiz, the company categorized each city based on its dating prospects, revealing which parts of the country have plenty of single men and women who meet the criteria of your dream mate.
These findings revealed some bad news for any Bostonian searching for a “marriage-material guy,” which Trulia describes as “a man in his 30s with at least a college degree who works the standard 40 hours a week or more and has never been married.” I’m sorry. You’re in the wrong city, sweetheart.
The top spots for finding such a mystical creature are San Francisco (#1), San Jose (#2), Seattle (#3), Austin (#4) and San Diego (#5). (As a heads up, the Census doesn't ask about sexual orientation, so these rankings take into account all men - gay and straight.)
That said, our local dating pool does have one thing going for it: brains. Based on data from the American Community Survey, Trulia found that Boston is the best place to meet college-educated women in their 20s who work less than 40 hours a week. Jackpot. At the same time, Cambridge and Boston rank fifth and seventh, respectively, for the share of single, adult females who've earned at least a graduate degree.
Our guys aren’t dunces either. Cambridge ranked fourth for the number of single males with a college diploma and fifth for males with a graduate degree or higher. So, compared to other cities, the odds here aren’t good for pinning down an eligible guy. But our goods are smarter.
