"Lowell: There's a lot to like."

The BostInno team discovered just how likable Lowell was this week as we took Inno on the road to shine a spotlight on startups in the mill city.

At BostInno, we have our pulse on Boston's thriving, robust innovation ecosystem. However, we don't often get to take our attention away from the metro region. So, in our latest "Inno on the Road" series, we decided to highlight companies 35 miles north of Boston.

We featured 11 Lowell startups that are trailblazers in their own right. One is pioneering a new type of tattoo, disrupting an industry that's thousands of years old. Another is designing a new way to treat lame horses. And another is incubating fashion startups. No matter what their expertise is, all are leading the way in putting Lowell on the Bay State's innovation map.

And Thursday, we gathered the companies, innovators and other key stakeholders in the city at UMass Lowell's Innovation Hub for a meet-and-greet, a lively discussion with Steven Tello, vice provost for Graduate, Online & Professional Studies at UMass Lowell, and a showcase by startups featured on our list.

We live-tweeted the whole discussion and rounded up key quotes below:

Steven Tello: "We want to build a strong network and culture out here in Lowell, and entrepreneurs can help us do that.”

Mary Ellen Sparrow of NextShift Robotics: "Are we in Lowell? Yes! And do we love Lowell? YES!"

Thank you to everyone who came out last night to recognize the innovation happening in Lowell. Last night would not have been possible without the help from our participating startups, generous venue host and our presenting sponsor, UMass Lowell.

Join us on November 7 for our annual 50 on fire event to celebrate the 50 companies and individuals who are setting the Boston innovation ecosystem ablaze. You can grab tickets here.

A message from our Presenting Sponsor: Thank you to all the startups, partners and new friends for joining us in a special night celebrating the innovative work and entrepreneurship community in Lowell. We are proud to be a part of this ecosystem made up of an extensive collaborative network that cultivates and supports the next big ideas. We welcome you to continue learning about the startups from our incubators, the Massachusetts Medical Device Development (M2D2) Center and the Innovation Hub, and the resources available that helped some of these flourishing businesses refine their creative works, create prototypes, secure necessary funding, build their workforce and more. From collaborating with faculty experts to accessing equipment from our Core Research Facilities, UMass Lowell is offering a one-of-a-kind environment to grow your startup. We can’t say this enough – there truly is a lot of like about Lowell.
