We Found Out How Much GrubHub, Red Hat & Citrix Paid for Boston Startups

When most business acquisitions are announced, the value of the deal is often not disclosed, leaving people wondering how much the acquired company was worth.

But in some cases, while a public company may not initially reveal how much it paid for an acquisition, the answer later comes out in a public filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Most people just don't know when or where to look.

With that in mind, BostInno combed through quarterly financial statements filed with the SEC by companies that acquired Boston-based businesses this year, and we walked away with a few answers we previously didn't have, for example, about how much Chicago-based GrubHub paid to acquire Foodler (which was later shut down once the deal closed).

Here's what we now know about the deal value for four local startup acquisitions:

Foodler acquired by GrubHub for $51M

GrubHub, the Chicago-based food delivery service, announced in June that it had reached an agreement to acquire its Boston-based competitor, Foodler. At the time, the company said it was an all-cash transaction, but it didn't disclose how much it paid. However, in a Form 10-Q filed in November, the company revealed that it had paid $51 million in cash. There are no records indicating how much Foodler raised in funding before the acquisition.

Permabit acquired by Red Hat for $49.8M

Red Hat, an open-source business software provider, announced in July that it acquired the technology assets of Cambridge-based Permabit, which provided data reduction software. At the time, the company did not reveal the acquisition price, but a source told Fortune that 16 Permabit employees had joined Red Hat. In a Form 10-Q filed in October, the company revealed that it had paid $49.8 million in cash for the transaction. It's not known how much total funding Permabit raised from investors, but Crunchbase indicates the company raised a $12 million Series C round in 2005.

Unidesk acquired by Citrix for $60.5M

Citrix Systems announced in January that it had acquired Unidesk, a Marlborough-based company that provides application layering software for IT teams. At the time, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, in a subsequent 10-K filing, the company said it acquired Unidesk for a preliminary cash consideration of roughly $60.5 million. Unidesk had raised $36.8 million from Matrix Partners, North Bridge Venture Partners and Ignition Partners.
