Many longtime Austinites won't need a map to figure out where SpyCloud's new headquarters is located. Just mention the former adult theater on South Congress, and you can probably forego tapping in the address in your maps app.
The cybersecurity startup's new office, in the former Austin Theater that opened in 1939, has taken on a decidedly different vibe than it had during its renditions as both a family theater and, later, as an adult theater that closed in 1998. And the newly-designed space is also a departure from the building's history as home to Austin Internet company Future Protocol Inc., which declared it took the location “from XXX to WWW” back in 1999.
The sleek new office, developed by in-house team members and professional designers, spreads across 10,000 square feet and features 13 conference rooms decked out with Austin murals. It's home to the majority of SpyCloud's 62-person team, which includes four employees in Europe.
The startup's new space is also peppered with nooks that bring the delightful trappings of bean bag chairs and a nearby bar. But, aside from the old marquee on the front of the building, its best feature might be its rooftop deck, with a view of that Instagrammable stretch of SoCo heading down through downtown and to the Capitol.
SpyCloud moved into the space a few weeks ago, and the move comes roughly a year after the company announced a $21 million Series B led by Microsoft venture fund M12.
But, back to that classic theater marquee. The startup, which Inno has covered since its 2017 founding and featured in our annual 50 on Fire, has made use of the display -- the way we tend to do in Austin.
Among the messages it has displayed on the marquee where movie names used to hang: “We know your password,” or “ABC 123, good song bad password.” Fitting, perhaps, for a cybersecurity company.
