The age of virtual conferencing isn’t going away when the pandemic is over, says Gatherly CEO Chris Cherian.

Cherian predicts the market will grow as organizations realize how easily they can host a virtual meet up, and Gatherly, a virtual conference platform founded in Georgia Tech’s CREATE-X incubator, can help host those conferences run smoothly.

“Rather than hold one large event in New York, for example, organizations can now hold 12 different events,” Cherian said. “One of them could be the big, in-person gala, and the 11 others would be virtual, monthly events to keep members engaged.”

Gatherly now hosts about 200 events per week, Cherian said, some of which are test events to help hosts figure out the platform or conference agenda before inviting all attendees.

For Gatherly, the most important feature of the platform is being reliable, Cherian said. He said the platform takes ownership of problems that other virtual conference companies may blame on the attendee or host, such as internet connection.

For example, Gatherly allows the host to send out links prior to the event so attendees can test their internet connection, microphones or cameras. Cherian said that testing period allows hosts to minimize problems that may arise the day of the event.

“I think the attendee and host onboarding prior to the event is way more important,” Cherian said. “We try to take care of any of those problems while in advance of the event, unlike some of our competitors.”

Cherian and his team also have worked closely with event hosts so they know the problems they face or features that are important to them. Now, the team is working to automate more of those processes in order to scale the company.

All of the Gatherly founders are college students. Cherian is a student at the University of Pennsylvania, and Amaan Pirani attends Columbia University. Carl Liu and Sohan Choudhury attend Georgia Tech.

Gatherly hosted CREATE-X's Demo Day 2020 in June as its flagship event, which included 300 people, up from the 50-80-person events they were accustomed to hosting.

“I’m not going to lie, we were pretty nervous,” Cherian said. “But the feedback from the event was way better than we could have imagined, which was really encouraging to be able to think of the future of virtual events.”

CREATE-X founding director Raghupathy Sivakumar said program participates loved interacting on Gatherly’s platform because of how easy it was to use and connect with other attendees.

More than 90% of Gatherly users come through organic searches and word-of-mouth advertising, according to the Gatherly team. The platform has an annual subscription, which ranges from $4 for mass education discounts to $50 per attendee ticket depending on the type of event and organization, Cherian said.

Cherian said the company is close to being cash-flow positive and is raising an investment round now.

As the platform grows, Cherian said the team wants to refine the host onboarding experience prior to the event and also provide data to the host after the event.
