Atlanta dry-cleaning startup Presso raised a $1.6 million pre-seed round led by Pathbreaker Ventures to scale manufacturing.

Presso, founded by Purdue University graduates Nishant Jain and Thibault Corens in 2018, produces machines that can clean, dry and press clothes in under five minutes. Movie productions are currently using Presso machines, but Jain said he hopes his machine will eventually innovate day-to-day laundry as well.

AME Cloud Ventures, SOSV, 1517 Fund and YETI Capital also participated in the round, which was dominated by West Coast investors. The company had already raised more than $2 million before this round.

With less than 10 Presso machines available for rent, the company has had to turn down movie production teams that want to use it for cleaning costumes on site, according to a Dec. 16 press release about the round. Jain said the company should be able to produce more than 30 more machines with the funding.

Jain and Corens, who are Inno under 25 winners, plan to increase manufacturing for their machines and double their 11-person staff in the next six months. Presso is located in the Atlanta Tech Village and tripled its office space to accommodate new hires, according to the release.

The latest model of Presso machines can clean, disinfect and dry up to 150 costumes per day, which saves movie production companies the time and money it would take to send costumes to a third-party dry cleaner.

It costs a few thousand dollars a month to rent a machine, varying based on location and usage, according to the Presso website. It can hold up to three articles of clothing and clean most clothing materials except leather.

The popularity of the machines in the movie industry didn’t happen overnight. Jain said during the first year, investors were initially skeptical of his ambitious vision to completely change the laundry industry.

Now, the two co-founders are also looking ahead to expanding into other industries, such as clothing retailers and hotels.
