Albuquerque venture capital firm OneTen° Capital announced it has appointed a new partner. Hunter Greene, a famed former University of New Mexico basketball player, is the investment firm's newest partner.
Greene owns the South Valley Care Center primary care facility in south-central Albuquerque. He also owns multiple income properties, according to a release from OneTen° Capital.
In an interview, Greene mentioned his "passion for trying to help those that have been challenged with financing their dreams." Finding VC can be relatively challenging in a state like New Mexico, which only has a handful of VC's — although the playing field is growing — and is likely even more difficult for historically disadvantaged communities.
"It's to try to generate income for those tech startup companies that are maybe women-owned or minority-owned," Greene said. In addition to business ownership, Greene said he is a commercial real estate broker and OneTen's release says he announces UNM basketball games for KKOB-AM.
OneTen° Capital, which rebranded from NMA Ventures last year, was founded in 2018 and invests in early-stage companies that are either based in or have a "significant presence" in New Mexico, according to its website. Its investment focus is widespread with the exception of biotech or pharmaceutical manufacturing.
OneTen° Capital's investment portfolio includes WaveFront Dynamics, Mindset Integrations, mPower Technology and EveryDay Contacts. Other partners include managing partner Dorian Rader, Sherman McCorkle and John Chavez.
In a prepared statement, Rader said Greene "brings a new approach to venture capital in our region. His experience as an entrepreneur, investor, and operator are a valuable resource for us."
