With $20 million apparently in tow from investors including Intel and Lockheed Martin, 3D Glass Solutions is moving past its early-stage identity.

3D Glass Solutions was originally founded in 2005 and has come a long way since then. The Albuquerque-based firm offers "passive" devices for electronics — referring to the type of components that provide energy to semiconductors.

And by using a special type of ceramic glass, the company's components are meant to retain more energy, thus being more efficient. In the case of 3D Glass Solutions, their components are "geared toward much more efficient operations for the semiconductors in the 5G and higher-frequency ranges," 3D Glass Solutions CEO and president Mark Popovich told Business First.

“The market is just really huge," Popovich told Business First. "From the basic phone you’re [speaking with me] on to the so-called 'Internet of Everything.'"

By maintaining signal strength, Popovich added that it takes less energy to perform the same capability. As for why investors have shown continued interest, he said that was due to its strong intellectual property portfolio as well as a large market application and demand.

On that front, semiconductor-manufacturing giant Intel is the company's second-largest shareholder, according to Popovich. But while some big-name players have backed the company, 3D Glass hopes that its recently-announced funding round will be its last on the path to becoming profitable and sustainable, Popovich said.

"We're constantly hiring" with intentions to add a potential 10 to 20 people throughout the next 12 to 18 months depending on how business goes, he added.

The company's products are aimed at industries including space and 5G infrastructure. Its headquarters is at 5601 Balloon Fiesta Pkwy. NE.

Currently, 3D Glass Solutions employs upwards of 50 people, Popovich said.

Before its most recent funding round, 3D Glass Solutions also raised $12 million in a round led by Japanese electronics manufacturer Nagase & Co., which also participated in the most recent round, according to a release from 3D Glass Solutions.
