Protego, a serverless security company, is now offering a free version of its product called LAB to users.

The Baltimore-based firm announced the move as an effort to speed up companies' adoption of serverless technologies.

"Overall for an organization, serverless reduces operational costs, reduces development costs, reduces scaling costs, and offers easier operational management," Protego CEO Tsion Gonen said.

Gonen said that with serverless operations, a developer does not have to worry about managing the server — they have more time to focus on making the best web apps possible.

Protego LAB offers 30 days of data retention, supports up to 1 million invocations, or functions triggered, per month and protection for up to 100 functions.

"The greatest goal is to really take down the security barrier for serverless adoption," said Gonen. "Many companies understand and want to take advantage of the benefits of serverless computing but have not put much thought into security, often because they don’t know where to begin."

Serverless cybersecurity changes applications' arrangement of elements, making traditional application security solutions like firewalls irrelevant.

Gonen said that dozens of cloud-native companies have signed up for Protego's free offering, but that he was not at liberty to name them.

Protego's paid versions of its software supports unlimited invocations per month, protection for unlimited functions and data retention for a year.

The company secured a $2 million seed round of funding this summer, which helped Protego offer LAB. Protego is backed by Maryland-based Ron Gula of Gula Tech Adventures and Glilot Capital Partners.

"Essentially, we are removing the security challenge from serverless and enabling more companies to bring their serverless applications to fruition," said Gonen.
