The 6 Biggest DC Tech Hires of September

Maryland Venture Fund
  • The Maryland Venture Fund has made Parag Sheth its new director and chief marketing officer. Hiring Sheth completes the process of filling out the executive team for MVF after the state spun it off of the Department of Commerce and it joined the quasi-independent Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO) a year ago.
Wireless Registry
  • Internet of Things data analytics firm the Wireless Registry FoundationDB  and SureFire Social alum Tony Surak as its new CEO. The previous CEO, co-founder Patrick Parodi, is now the Chief Strategy Office.
Symplicity
  • Blackboard chief business officer Matthew Small was hired by Arlington-based edtech firm Sympliticy as CEO. Symplicity, acquired just a month ago by H.I.G. Capital, develops software used by higher education institutions for managing student life. Small had been at Blackboard since 2002, rising from in-house counsel to CBO and running the international operations of the company.
White House
  • Retired brigadier general Gregory Touhill is now the White House federal chief information security officer, the first to take that role. He's in charge of configuring an overarching cybersecurity policy for the whole federal government, working out the details and how to put it into practice as well. Touhill is taking the job after a similar role protecting government networks at the Department of Homeland Security.
Hercules Capital
  • Silicon Valley-based Hercules Capital has tapped Horizon Technology Finance managing director Paul Gibson to run its D.C.-based technology group. The venture debt firm works with many tech and life sciences companies in the area and is looking to expand its efforts.
Accenture
  • Speaking of cybersecurity, Accenture has hiredGus Hunt (right), the former CTO of the CIA to head up its cybersecurity practice. Hunt retired from the CIA after 28 years, and was responsible for implementing a lot of tech policy at the agency, including its joining the Amazon Web Services cloud.
