The 12 Biggest DC Tech Hires in August



Every month we recap the biggest tech hires in the D.C. area over the past month. To get hiring and other local innovation news daily, sign up for The Beat newsletter. Here’s our list of the top hires in D.C. tech for August:

Privia Health
  • Arlington-based health tech firm Privia Health hired Jenny Harding as vice president of human resources. Harding joined Privia after six years as vice president of people at WeddingWire. We previously featured her approach to company culture and talent.
WeddingWire
  • The wedding tech startup and vendor platform hired Emily Markman to be vice president of people. Markman was senior vice president of talent and culture at Clarabridge for almost four years. She will head up WeddingWire's culture and human resources work.
Clarabridge
  • Clarabridge hired Steven Golsch as senior vice president of talent and culture. He came to the company after almost four years as chief people officer at McLean-based Logi Analytics. He will oversee projects surrounding talent and culture, including company branding for the customer experience management startup as it nears a potential IPO.
MakeOffices
  • Co-working space chain MakeOffices hired former Clarabridge vice president of financial planning and analysis Brian Bharwani as it first CFO. Bharwani has a long history in DC Tech, including Blackboard and SocialRadar.
REI System
  • Sterling-based government IT contractor REI Systems picked co-founder and CTO Shyam Salona as the new CEO. Salona is replacing the other co-founder, Veer Bhartiya, who is now executive chairman. The move comes right after REI picked up a new $50M contract with NASA.
Split
  • D.C.-based rideshare startup Split hired former LivingSocial vice president of analytics Christopher Hogan as its new head of strategy and analytics. He'll be in charge of improving the efficiency of the service in D.C., which is based around getting to more people using fewer vehicles with a system that emphasizes the carpooling aspect of ride-sharing.
Center for Innovative Technology
  • Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology picked Paladin Capital Group founder Michael Steed as its new chairman. He will also be chairman for CIT's umbrella group, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Investment Authority. CIT is the group behind projects like the MACH37 cybersecurity accelerator and other projects to encourage entrepreneurship in Virginia.
Revolution
  • Revolution hired Tracy Van Grack as its new senior vice president of communications and public policy. Van Grack was previously at communications giant Brunswick Group and will work on promoting Revolution's public policy goals. She is taking up the role previously held by Herbie Ziskend, the former director of public policy.
Planet3
  • Edtech startup Planet3 hired High Tech High CEO Larry Rosenstock as senior education advisor. Rosenstock founded San Diego's High Tech High to carry out his vision of using personalized projects for learning. That fits neatly with the immersive, 3D lessons Planet3 is developing, led by former National Geographic president Tim Kelly.
1776
  • 1776 hired Politico Focus brand journalism studio Peter Cherukuri as president and chief innovation officer. These are both new roles at the tech incubator. Cherukuri has a history at 1776 as a member of the board and co-founder of K Street Capital, one of the investors in 1776's recent $7.2 million funding round.
Case Foundation
  • The Steve and Jean Case Foundation hired Rehana Nathoo as vice president of social innovation. Nathoo was most recently at BNY Mellon and has worked for several philanthropic groups in New York.
Earth Networks
  • Germantown-based Earth Networks, the company behind WeatherBug, hired Anuj Agrawal to be its new chief marketing officer. Agrawal, who ran marketing at Internet of Things firm Orchestro, is joining the company right as it is looking to get into that space more heavily.
