7 Rising DC Area Startups That Are Hiring This Fall

When it comes to landing a great job in D.C., regardless of industry or tier, timing can be an important factor in finding the right opportunity.

The area’s growing technology sector has undoubtedly provided a boost in high-paying, technical positions. But finding the companies offering these jobs is not necessarily the easiest of tasks. One way to find out who’s hiring in the space is to follow their progress, as we report on them on a daily basis from DC Inno.

The good news is that the fall season happens to offer a period of typically greater recruiter interest.

According to employment listings website, Monster.com , the third and fourth quarter of the year are typically the most active when it comes to employment. For example, hiring usually slows in July but picks up again in August and it carries until November thanks to a mix of holiday retail hiring, Thanksgiving-to-New Year's slowdown, end-of-year financial/budget maneuvering and demand that commonly arrives in Q1 (shortly after New Years), according to Monster.

Understandably, following an individual company’s development in a very active startup scene like D.C. can take considerable time. So we’ve decided to compile a list to make things easier for you during your seasonal job hunt.

These are seven quickly growing local startups that will be hiring throughout this fall season:

Avizia (Reston, V.A.)

  • Industry: healthtech
  • Technology: mobile video connection hardware w/ some software integration
  • What they do: creators of rolling, monitor terminals that are enhanced for doctor to patient work
  • Looking for: product managers, software engineers, strategist, clinical specialist, cloud architects, implementation managers and more…

Avizia specializes in a technology called telemedicine—which combines telecom and IT software to help connect doctors with patients remotely via video. Currently, more than 420 regional hospitals are active customers of the company. In addition, Avizia has experienced 120 percent year-over-over revenue growth. Roughly 70 new clients were added since January, CEO Mike Baird previously told DC Inno, and that’s a conservative count. The 60-person Reston-based startup plans on adding about 15 more team members within 6 months, Baird said in August.

Social Tables (Washington, D.C.)

  • Industry: hospitality
  • Technology: cloud-based seating arrangement and event organization software
  • What they do: the company’s products can be used to design specific seating and guest registration

In July, VP of people operations Samantha Cicotello told DC Inno that the 120-person company plans to increase the size of its staff by 60 jobs—a 50-percent jump—within twelve months. Locally, the Washington Nationals, Newseum and National Gallery of Art use Social Tables’ software to help plan, coordinate and eventually put on events. Founded in 2012, Social Tables was named to the Washington Post’s Best Places to Work annual rankings earlier this year.

Urgent.ly (Vienna, V.A.)

Coming off of a $7 million Series A funding announcement in October, supported by a cohort of prominent institutional investors, Urgent.ly (aka the “Uber for roadside assistance") is looking to expand their team and capitalize on the fast growth they have experienced.  Co-founder/CEO Chris Spanos previously told DC Inno that the company of ten plans to either double or triple in size over the next 12 to 18 months, with those hires being distributed between sales, marketing and product development.

Thycotic (Washington, D.C.)

  • Industry: cybersecurity
  • Technology: cloud-based password and account privilege management software
  • What they do: have created a platform for enterprises that lets them control user account information in a more secure way

After a relatively quiet decade of R&D and corporate restructuring, D.C. cybersecurity firm Thycotic raised its first round of private investment capital in July via Insight Venture Partners, a prominent New York-based firm (the total figure was undisclosed). In a recent interview with DC Inno, CEO and founder Jonathan Cogley said that 2015 revenue is expected to grow by 40 to 60 percent over last year. For reference, Thycotic brought in roughly $10.5 million in revenue during 2014, according to Inc. magazine. As result of extensive customer growth and new product development, the District-based firm is hiring in waves. Right now, the company has five job openings and by the end of 2015, Thycotic expects to add approximately 10 new staff members.

Aquicore (Washington, D.C.)

In early September, Aquicore and tech incubator 1776 jointly announced that the greentech startup was among the first to receive funding from the incubator's newly established $12.5 million seed fund. With the funding, CEO Logan Soya previously told our Eric Schwartz that the money would be used to “scale up Aquicore's presence, with a dozen new hires in sales and marketing.” The company is backed by big names like Salesforce founder Marc Benioff, Efficient Capacity LLC and 1776. In addition, shortly before the funding announcement, SocialRadar VP of communications Shana Glenzer became Aquicore's chief marketing officer.

In a February interview with DC Inno, Endgame CEO Nathaniel Fick said that "the company plans on expanding at a rate of one new employee per week in 2015." Fick added, "there is a macro convergence occurring between similar cyberthreats aimed at governments and contemporary commercial enterprise" and that demand is fueling customer growth for a business like Endgame that deals with both private and public clients.

Distil Networks (Arlington, V.A.)
