With more than 50 guests already RSVP’d for this local tech and media industry happy hour, you won’t want to miss out. Monday’s event brings together Hacks/Hackers DC, a social group that joins journalists with hackers, and the Online News Association (ONA), which gathers together local writers, editors, photographers and producers who are interested in creating the next-generation platform for news-telling and story writing. “If you're new in town and you're interested in the local tech and media industry, this is a great way to meet our members and others with like interests,” the event’s organizers write.

Event: DCMeetup1514—Malware Crash Course & Security Conference Recap

In the latest D.C. Cybersecurity Professionals MeetUp event, a set of coordinators from the Cover6 Solutions team will be discussing all of the recent news to come out from the global Def Con and Blackhat cybersecurity conferences. In addition, guests will receive a free crash course on detecting and dealing with malware. “This simple crash course will cover the basics of malware: how to recognize it, what to do about it, and how you can use this information to better your understanding of malware attacks,” Tyrone Wilson, the founder & CEO of Cover6 Solutions, describes. If you would like to get a brief cyber lesson and full recap on all of the news that has occurred in the world of cybersecurity over the last several weeks then this event is for you. Event: Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC) — SBDC Tech 4.5

This event is specifically designed to help assist tech entrepreneurs by providing them with a networking venue to meet the right legal, banking and accounting teams to support their businesses. Hosted at the state-funded CIC incubator, which overlooks Forte Meade, the SBDC will be on hand to answer questions about how the state can support growing tech companies in the region. The event will provide upfront access to free business consulting, legal and banking support, regardless of what growth stage each guest’s business is. The SBDC Tech Center, as a larger organizations, regularly offers “specialized services to researchers, entrepreneurs and firms by assisting them to identify, develop, and commercialize their technologies.”
Event: $2 Billion Under 20—Meet Authors Stacey Ferreira and Jared Kleinert
Location: WeWork Chinatown, 718 7th Street NW, 2nd Floor, Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Tuesday, August 25, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Price: Free
Stacey Ferreira, the founder of MySocialCloud, and Jared Kleinert, the co-founder of StartsWith Insights and an accomplished author, are two millennial tech startup founders who have been able to succeed in the business space with their innovative companies and ideas. The pair have now co-authored a new book and will be fielding audience questions and “discuss[ing] why the new generation is poised to change the world” at WeWork in Chinatown. Hosted in partnership between D.C.-based civic action startup Phone2Action and WeWork, the newly minted authors and members of prestigious Peter Thiel's "20 under 20” list will be on hand to network and learn from all evening.

Event: Chef and Coffee—an in-depth discussion with Chef CEO, Barry Crist

As much as the name Chef and Barry Crist suggests a topflight cooking restaurant or foodtech startup of sorts, Seattle-based Chef is actually a cross-platform cloud organization and automation system for business clients that helps manage data infrastructure. The company sells software developer kits and hosts cloud services, so that clients do not need to purchase expensive, on-premise servers. It’s all about IT automation, management and continuous delivery, and Crist is going to discuss how his business has excelled in the cloud space. “Come by to meet Barry, hear about the Chef roadmap, and more. We can demo some of the cool new Chef features like audit mode and Chef Delivery or just hang out and talk about Chef, DevOps, and transforming the way you do business,” Nathen Harvey, Chef’s Community Director, writes.

Event: End of Summer Mixer—Tech In Motion D.C.

Raise a glass and celebrate a great summer of D.C. tech with Tech In Motion, an organization that hosts events featuring presentations from senior technologists and leaders from some of the hottest local tech startups. Organized in partnership with IT recruiting firms Jobspring Partners and Workbridge Associates, Tech In Motion hosts a series of national events. Today, there are more than 40,000 members, nationally, who regularly attend events. The Thursday D.C.-based event already has more than 200 RSVPs too. Event: DC Women's Hackathon—hosted by DC Web Women & Society of American Military Engineers

Calling all female coders, hackers, designers, developers and/or content developers—the second annual DC Women's Hackathon is going down this Saturday. The hackathon is being organized by DC Web Women, a local 3,000 member strong organization that encourages the growth of women in tech-centric professions, and the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), which is a professional military engineering association that provides its members with training, education and professional development opportunities. Saturday’s event will focus around a competition to develop useful Web pages and mobile apps for Crittenton Services, a non-profit that works to “empower teen girls to overcome obstacles, make positive choices, and achieve their goals.” As part of the event’s dev process, a small group of Crittenton Services girls will shadow some of the competition’s female developers to learn more about technical career fields.
