Apple and Intel reveal some progress in increasing diversity

This week, Apple and Intel were among a group of technology companies that released updated reports with data about the diversity of their employee base. The release follows the White House’s first ever Demo Day this month, during which President Obama urged leaders in the innovation economy to encourage the inclusion of “all the talent America has to offer, no matter who they are or where they set up shop.” Read more in Chris Bing's report.

DC's new unicorn

The tech world loves unicorns, and now D.C. has its own new one to boast about after Vox Media announced a $200 million funding round from NBCUniversal that has put the value of the company over the magic line of $1 billion. Blackboard's latest acquisition

Edtech stalwart Blackboard announced on Thursday that it had acquired Nivel Siete, an edtech firm popular in Latin America. It's the latest in a long line of acquisitions by the company in the last year and a half or so. This buy will give the company a bigger footprint in Latin America for its products built on the learning management system, Moodle. Find out more in the announcement here.

Pilots are seeing hundreds of drones flying where they shouldn't

Drones are flying all over the place, even where the shouldn't according to the FAA. Aircraft pilots have spotted over 650 drones so far in 2015, a huge increase from the 238 sightings in all of 2014. In June and July alone the number quintupled from 52 to 275. The FAA released the numbers as part of an effort to educate people on when and where drones can be flown safely and legally.
