Here's what we've found for the best startup and tech networking events in the D.C. area to check out this week.

Monday, July 6

Event: Go for Front End Developers with Julia Poladsky

Location: iStrategyLabs, 641 S St. NW, Floor 1, Washington, D.C. Date: Monday, July 6, 7 p.m. Price: Free

Attention developers looking to branch out: head on over to this Go informational session, a systems programming language for developers who develop complex backend software. The night will be guided by JavaScript Developer for Bitovi, Julia Poladsky. “Julia will show how front end developers don't need to shy away from Go. Go's syntax, standard library, documentation and community make Go accessible to front end developers of all technical levels,” the event’s Meetup page reads. Interested programmers and tech enthusiast are encouraged to attend.

Tuesday, July 7

Event: IBM Watson Analytics Academic Workshop

Location: IBM - IEG Briefing Center, 600 14th St. NW, Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Tuesday July 7, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Price: Free (RSVP)

This is a live workshop event being run in D.C. for “professors and students” as an introduction to data analytics and big data — what IBM labels as “smart data discovery.” Watson Analytics experts will discuss the area of study and market currently present for it. “We will work hands-on with the software and discover the power of collaborative analysis combining data from Twitter, Cognos Enterprise Reporting systems, standard relational databases and cloud data storage sources,” IBM writes via the event’s Eventbrite page. Bring your laptop and come ready to learn.

Event: React DC July - Virtual DOM

Location: Canvas, 1203 19th St. NW, 3rd Floor, Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Tuesday July 7,  7 p.m. Price: Free

This will be an advanced look at Document Object Models (DOM), and more specifically, virtual DOMs via the JavaScript library known as React. “How does the virtual DOM work? ...We will hear about how React does virtual DOM, and how that compares to other implementations,” the event’s organizers wrote in a post. The night will begin with a networking opportunity and snacks followed by a discussion regarding comparisons of virtual DOMs by Social Tables Software Developer George Fogle. Check it out—more than 50 people have already RSVP’d.

Wednesday, July 8

Event: WeWork Startup Pitch Night

Location: WeWork Dupont Circle, 1875 Connecticut Ave., Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Wednesday July 8, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Price: Free

WeWork in Dupont is hosting its first-ever startup pitch competition, and they’re still accepting applicants who'd like to present. Each entrepreneur will get five minutes to present a compelling pitch for their original business or product concept. Following the pitch, there will be five minutes of Q&A with members of the audience. There'll be networking opportunities both before and after the pitch session. It's “an opportunity for startup entrepreneurs to pitch their idea, get valuable feedback, receive exposure, find opportunities to network with potential collaborators, investors or even beta customers,” according to the organizer, StartUp DC.

Thursday, July 9

Event: Using Big Data to Help Ski Areas Survive Global Climate Change

Location: The Data Incubator, 1601 Connecticut Ave. NW, Suite 400, Washington, D.C. Date/Time: Thursday July 9, 6 p.m. Price: Free

Come out on Thursday for this educational discussion regarding the effects of global climate warming on the sport of skiing and how big data analytics can help. “We will discuss how to predict snowfall by correlating historical satellite imagery with known weather conditions … [using] tools and techniques necessary to analyze large weather-related datasets, as well as how global climate change,” the event’s Meetup page reads. The lecture will be led by Clair J. Sullivan, assistant professor in the department of nuclear, plasma and radiological engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Event: Startup Central: Coworking 4 Designers, Photographers, Videographers, Writers, Devs

Location: Startup Central Campus (Creative Studios), 1201 Seven Locks Road, Suite 200, Rockville, Md. Date/Time: Thursday July 9, 7 p.m. Price: Free

This is a unique open house and co-working collaboration event where designers, developers, photographers, videographers and content writers can come together to learn about each others professions/industries. Guests will also be able to provide Startup Central with suggestions and recommendations for how to design their Rockville-based co-working space. “Startup Central has partnered with a, soon to be announced, real estate company to create just that, a true, creative co-working and studios experience.” If you’d like to take a tour of the space and network with other tech professionals then check this event out.

Saturday, July 11

Event: Drone Flying @ Historic Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House

Location: Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Museum, 3725 Dr Samuel Mudd Road, Waldorf, Md. Date/Time: Saturday July 11, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Price: $5-$10 donation

Interested in joining other drone enthusiasts for a big test flying event in Maryland’s beautiful southern countryside? Then come check out the DC Drone User Group’s (DCDUG) latest event. A DJI Phantom has been donated so that guests can try it out. If you’ve never flown a drone or don’t currently own a device then this is a great opportunity to see if you would enjoy the hobby. New visitors/beginners will even be trained by a current DCDUG member.
