DC Download: Creative Startups at UVa Incubator, Starbucks Ups Prices

Instagram Goes HD

An Instagram spokesperson has confirmed to The Verge that the photo-centric social media network started "gradually rolling out 1080 across iOS and Android" late last week. The upgrade in photo resolution means larger, more-detailed content that will contend with more boutique competitors that are geared towards displaying high quality, personalized photo portfolios. At the moment, the rollout is only occurring on mobile. A similar desktop update has yet to be announced. Read more. - Chris Bing

Starbucks To Raise Prices For Drinks

Starbucks has announced that starting Tuesday, they’ll be raising prices on some of their drinks by 5 to 20 cents, though food prices will remain the same. In a statement, the Seattle-based company said that this price hike is a part of Starbucks' effort to "balance the need to run our business profitably while continuing to provide value to our loyal customers and to attract new customers." A large cup of Starbucks coffee will now set you back $2.45 in most locations, the company says. This comes only a year after Starbucks raised prices nationally, and a time when many other coffee companies are cutting drink prices. Read more from CNBC here. - Chris Bousquet

Report of shots fired at Walter Reed

A possible gunshot at Walter Reed Medical Center is being investigated by police and federal law enforcement. Read more here. Update: "There is no evidence of gunshots and no injuries reported after officers searched a 20-story tower at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside D.C., according to police."

UVa startups to watch

The University of Virginia's i.Lab is a startup incubator based out of the Darden School of Business that supports dozens of creative startups. This incubator accepts applications not just from students in the MBA program, but also take joint projects between students and faculty—and even from people in the community who might have no connection to the school. We've picked out seven of the most eye-catching startups to highlight—check them out to get a feel for the latest UVa-born innovations.

Russian rocket supplies space station

On Sunday, the International Space Station received a supply shipment thanks to an unmanned Russian ship. The supplies were needed after the failure last week of a SpaceX mission to the ISS and the failure of a previous Russian ship to successfully connect with the ISS.  The ship carried about 2.5 metric tons of water, food, fuel, oxygen, lab equipment and other supplies. AT&T's DirecTV deal approval coming soon

AT&T could get approval for its $48.5 billion deal to buy DirecTV as soon as this week. The purchase would make AT&T the country's biggest satellite television provider, on top of being the second largest wireless carrier, which is why the federal government needs to approve the deal and make sure it doesn't violate any anti-trust laws. But the Department of Justice and the FCC are leaning toward approval and may give the deal the thumbs-up within days. Read more from Reuters here.

U.S. spying on Germany went beyond government

German-U.S. relations became a bit strained after it was leaked that U.S. intelligence agencies were spying on German government officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel's cell phone. Now it looks like the spying applied to people in the German media and even extended to telling German government officials about leaks in their agencies. Now the German parliment is looking into whether this violated its own free press laws. Read more from CNN here.
