DC Inno Approved: Tech Events to Know About This Week (6/1-6/7)



Here's what we've found for the best startup and tech networking events in the D.C. area to check out this week.

Monday

Event: DC Nightowls Coworking @ 1776

Do you plan on burning the midnight oil tonight but also want to take the time to network with other D.C. tech professionals? If the answer is yes (to either question) then consider heading over to 1776 tonight between 8:30 and 9:15. 1776 plans on opening its doors as a free coworking space for a select few hours, so be sure to take advantage. DC Nightowls is an after hours community of “self-starters turning big ideas into exciting projects.”

Tuesday

Event: UX Happy Hour

Location: Jackpot 726 7th St NW Washington DC Date/Time: Tues. June 2 — from 6PM to ? Price: Free

This is a casual happy hour event that hopes to bring together local technology professionals who create user experience (UX) related content. Whether it’s mobile UX, web design, user research, UI design and/or information architecture, come out to Jackpot to meet others from the local tech scene. “No agenda, no speaker, and no pressure. Come and socialize with like-minded UX folks in DC,” the event’s MeetUp page reads. There are already 34 guests who have RSVP’d to the event via MeetUp.com

Event: React DC June - Intro to React Native

Location: Canvas 1203 19th St NW 3rd Floor Washington, DC Date/Time: Tues. June 2 — from 7PM to ? Price: Free

The night will begin at 7pm with a casual networking session accompanied by food and drinks. Co-founder of Modus Create Jay Garcia will lead a discussion on React Native, the development tool that enables coders to build experiences on native platforms while using a consistent JavaScript-based function. The event coordinators encourage prospective guests from a variety of coding backgrounds to attend. With more than 50 guests already RSVP’d for the event, React DC plans to discuss JSX basics and examine what features React Native has to offer.

Wednesday

Event: Eastern Foundry Happy Hour

Location: Highline RxR 2010 Crystal Dr Arlington VA Date/Time: Wed. June 3 — from 4:30PM to 6:30PM Price: Free

Eastern Foundry invites you to go mingle with others in the government contracting space on the company’s tab in this casual networking event for local technology professionals.

Event: ONADC — Secrets of a Top-Notch Email Newsletter

Location: Scripps Washington Bureau 1100 13th St. NW Washington DC Date/Time: Wed. June 3 — from 6:45PM to 8PM Price: $5

Caitlin Dewey, editor of the Washington Post’s Intersect blog, will discuss best practices to build a successful newsletter. “Blogs are over and email newsletters are here. Tools like MailChimp and Tinyletter make it easier than ever to reach your audience in the space that’s never closed— their inbox,” the event’s MeetUp page reads. The purpose of the event is to introduce efficient newsletter techniques and to learn from a local industry expert on the best ways to reach an audience. A networking session will take place from 6:45 to 7:15 so be sure to get there early!

Thursday

Event: CONNECTpreneur Summer Forum

The CONNECTpreneur event is a quarterly networking “mashup,” where investors, business leaders, venture capitalists, accountants, lawyers, entrepreneurs and tech executives — from around the country — come together to discuss national business trends. The event is presented by apnetic, Tech 2000 and LORE Systems. The event prides itself on “the high quality of [its]our attendees, speakers and presenters.” More than 330 business leaders, including roughly 200 CEOs/founders will be in attendance. WeddingWire CEO Timothy Chi will be among the event’s high profile speakers.

Saturday

Event: NoVA National Day of Civic Hacking

Location: The Durant Center 1605 Cameron Street Alexandria, VA Date/Time: Sat. June 6 — from 8AM to 9PM Price: Free

The third National Day of Civic Hacking will take place this Saturday in nearby Alexandria from 8am to 9pm. Civic Hacking is a term sometimes used to described a community effort where people come together to come up with innovative solutions to regional issues by using technology. “You'll have the exciting opportunity to work with national data sets from federal agencies and local datasets and applications from the City of Alexandria and Arlington County. You can also win one of a kind prizes, and other cool techie toys,” the event’s MeetUp page reads. Guests are not required to have any specific technical skills or a technology background.
