DC Inno Approved: Tech Events to Know About This Week (5/26-5/31)



Here's what we've found for the best startup and tech networking events in the D.C. area to check out this week.

Tuesday

Event: DC Civic Hacknight

Location: Impact Hub DC 419 7th St NW 2nd Floor Washington DC Date/Time: Tues. May 26 — from 6:30PM to 9:30PM Price: Free — “Bring cash for food and drink [Pay what you can]”

Bring a laptop and be ready to network with over 70 D.C.-area coders who are working on collaborative projects to solve local issues. Founded in 2012, the non-partisan Code for DC group is a Code for America brigade located in D.C. The organization hosts twice-monthly “hacknights" to gather and discuss new innovative projects. “We're looking to bring people with all different skill sets together to maximize our potential. Civic hackers aren't just developers—they're journalists, lawyers, designers, and interested citizens in general,” Code For DC writes on its website. New guests can join a team working on a project or just network.

Wednesday

Event: TekFeuds - iOS vs Android, Live Technology Debates

Location: General Assembly 1133 15th St NW 12th floor Washington DC Date/Time: Wed. May 27 — from 6PM to 8:30PM Price: $15

This is the inaugural TekFeuds event, which is the brainchild of Murshed Chowdhury along with the Capital One Fellows (an elite group of individuals from Google, Facebook, MIT and Stanford), a General Assembly spokesman told DC Inno. The event provides a live debate between iOS and Android experts regarding programming language, among other topics. The competition style presentation will be judged by representatives from Capital One, AOL, XAPP Media, Canvas Mobile and DC Innovation & Tech Council.

Thursday

Event: Google I/O Extended Baltimore

Location: AOL Advertising 3700 O'Donnell Street Suite 100 Baltimore MD Date/Time: Thurs. May 28 — from 10AM to 4PM Price: $5.00

This is an all-day event for Google’s I/O Developers Conference, organized by Google Developer Group Baltimore and hosted by AOL, Baltimore. It's D.C. equivalent is already sold out. “Come learn something new, make new friends, discuss new Google technologies and earn Google I/O extended swags,” the event’s Eventbrite webpage reads. The day will begin with a brief networking and breakfast period and then move on to a discussion led by several keynote speakers. The event can also be livestreamed free.

Event: The Center for Policy on Emerging Technologies’s Innovation and Government Event

Location: C-PET CNN Building 840 First St NE Third Floor Washington DC Date/Time: Thurs. May 28 — from 9:30AM to 11:30AM Price: Free

The event is formatted as an expert roundtable discussion regarding the role of the government in innovation. Topics will include technology, finance, healthcare and cybersecurity, among others. Speakers include: Director of Global Innovation Policy at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation Stephen Ezell, former Head of Corporate Strategy at the World Bank Nagy Hanna, Aspen Institute Senior Fellow Michael Maibach and Jody Westby of Global Cyber Risk.

Friday

Event: Web Mavens Happy Hour @ General Assembly

Location: General Assembly 1133 15th St NW Washington DC Date/Time: Fri. May 29 — from 5:30PM to 7:30PM Price: Free

This networking group for Web, technology and engagement professionals hosts bi-monthly social events. This casual event will bring together professionals from the D.C.-area who are interested in creating content around non-profits, associations, government, communications, technology, media and startup businesses, locally. “Content is a crucial component of the user experience. In this event, we will discuss the interplay between content strategy and user experience design,” the group’s MeetUp profile reads.

Saturday

Event: Women's Tech Mentoring & Competition Practice by Cyberjutsu

Location: Anne Arundel Community College Arundel Mills Campus 7009 Arundel Mills Circle #209 Hanover, MD Date/Time: Sat. May 30 — from 12PM to 4PM Price: Free

This InfoSec event is part of a monthly group meeting where guests and group members use a variety of tools, primarily those in Kali Linux, and “practice red team/blue team/CTF skills.” The Women’s Society of Cyberjutsu (WSC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit focused on training and helping educate women to succeed in cybersecurity careers. Newcomers are welcomed and will be introduced to information regarding some of the group’s ongoing competitions.
