DC Mayor To Kick Off Second Leg of innoMAYtion With Hackathon

On Friday, it was announced that the Mayor of Washington, D.C., Muriel Bowser would be kicking off the second leg of her month-long innoMAYtion tech campaign with a full-day hackathon.

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), and Code for D.C. will work in partnership to host a “Hackathon and Policy Jam.”

The innoMAYtion campaign was originally announced earlier this month as a general technology initiative to bring together various communities from the District through the medium of a shared interest in innovation. The campaign hopes to create jobs, engage residents and strengthen the local tech community. Throughout the campaign, the Mayor is also set to announce the member’s of her “innovation” team, which will spearhead efforts to position the District as a technology hub.

Mayor Bowser will be announcing a new member of this team at the hackathon.

Tomorrows hackathon will revolve around finding solutions to some of the city’s many transportation “challenges,” according to a WeDC PR spokeswoman. The event will, “bring together civic hackers, transportation experts, academics, and other community members to develop innovative solutions to D.C.'s transportation challenges.”

Tickets for the event, to be held at OpenGov Hub in NW, are free and registration remains open for any interested individual who would like to participate.

Mayor Bowser will be speaking at the event at approximately 3pm

Though details of the tech-centric campaign were originally sparse, the Mayor’s office has since released a full events calendar — the innoMAYtion events calendar can be viewed here. Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner and District Department of Transportation Director Leif Dormsjo will all be attendance.
