DC Inno Approved: Tech Events to Know About This Week (4/20-4/26)



Here's what we've found for the best startup and tech networking events in the D.C. area to check out this week.

Monday

Event: Internet of Things DC - April Meetup

Location: PwC 1730 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington DC Date/Time: Monday, April 20 — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Price: Free

In the latest edition of Internet of Things (IoT) DC, guests will discuss and hear more about the Intel Edison line of boards via a talk led by software engineer and intel community speaker Clarence Chio. This new Intel line is used for building IoT applications/technology. In addition, three D.C.-area IoT startups will present their businesses and explain experiences in the field as innovation and a changing market landscape continues to challenge developers. Presentations from Ottomate by Ameer Sami, Emmanuel Azih and Chris Ramsey of Smarter Socket, and D.C. startup Aquanta, will headline the event. The presentations will be followed by a networking session for anyone in attendance.

Tuesday

Event: Lean Marketing - What's Your Minimum Viable Brand?

Location: Uber Offices 1200 18th St NW #700 Washington, DC 20036 Date/Time: Tuesday, April 21 — 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Price: $20

This event will focus on a discussion led by two lean marketing experts from different experiences and backgrounds as they discuss and analyze what it means to build a brand. If you’re fresh to the entrepreneurial/startup game, this is a great way to learn more about using lean tools and concepts as a way to accelerate the growth of your business. A networking and pizza introduction will start off the night, followed by the discussion led by James Li, the co-founder and CEO of Encore Alert, and Social Tables CMO Trevor Lynn.

Event: DCTech Meetup — College Demos/Student-led startups

Location: MLK Library 901 G St NW Washington, DC Date/Time: Tue. April 21 — 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Price: Free

Come see awesome startups founded and run by local college students who are developing innovative technology. The event already has more than 300 people who have RSVP’d, and it will be led by several prominent local tech figures. IStrategy Lab’s DJ Saul, who will be accompanied by Shana Glenzer of SocialRadar, Stephanie Nguyen of Landmark and Contactually’s Zvi Band, will kick off the night with a brief introduction. Registration for the event remains open (follow the link above).

While the event will be primarily focused on the presentations themselves, the DCTech Meetups can also provide a great networking opportunity for those interested in the local scene. Be sure to check this one out if you're a local student with an interest in the D.C. tech ecosystem.

Thursday

Event: Washington DC Career Fair

Location: Doubletree Crystal City 300 Army Navy Dr Arlington, VA 22202 Date/Time: Thurs. April 23 — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Price: Free

Founded in 2001, National Career Fairs is a national circuit event company that encompassing many of the major metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. This week, it comes to nearby Crystal City — the newly expanded and secondary home of D.C. incubator and seed fund 1776. The organization works to connect employers with prospective employees via an open invitation for both sides and by providing a proper venue for the event.

The career fair brings thousands of potential candidates to the table, creating a stage for employers to interview many prospect all at one time in one convenient location. Currently, the National Career Fairs has more than 300 events in 76 cities, nationwide. It is free for job seeking individuals but be sure to register ahead of time.

Event: LiftOff Health Angel Pitch Event

Location: LiftOff Health's Headquarters 251 18th St. South Suite 630 Arlington, VA 22202 Date/Time: Thurs. April 23 — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Price: Free

This event is about learning more through entrepreneurship, seeing the latest LiftOff Health startups, and networking with other startup founders, potential investors and media contacts. Registration is currently open for investor and startup founder attendants. Those startups who are successfully registered will then pitch their businesses at the event. After the pitch portion, a group of LiftOff employees will then select three startups to pitch to a panel of angel investors.
