Bethesda Healthtech Startup Telcare Hires Ex-CVS Executive

Bethesda, Md.-based Telcare, developer of a cellular-enabled blood glucometer and diabetes mobile app, has bolstered its executive team through the hiring of former Chief CVS Health marketer Rick O’Connor as its senior VP of marketing. The hiring of O’Connor comes only six months after Telcare, which uses a HIPAA compliant cloud platform, secured a $32.5 million funding round led by Norwest Venture Partners in October. Other investors have included The Qualcomm Life Fund, Sequoia Capital, Mosaic Health Solutions and a group of private angel investors.

“As consumers and health providers try to decipher the various mobile medical apps and devices, Rick’s strategic thinking, wealth of industry experience and leadership skills will help Telcare continue to set itself apart from the competition and deliver world-class disease management solutions,” said Telcare CEO Andy Flanagan in a statement.

O’Connor will help lead Telcare’s marketing and communications initiatives, marketing and communications initiatives, including what the company has called a “refreshed go-to-market strategy.” He will be responsible for all B2B activity and developing Telcare’s patient engagement and retention efforts.

Emerging digital technologies — like Telcare’s engineered, cloud-assisted glucose meter — are enabling new services to help people manage chronic conditions like diabetes, which affects 29.1 million Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

O’Connor previously served as the chief marketing officer for the Caremark division of CVS Health. Of particular note, O’Connor co-led the marketing and campaign effort developed around the new national brand change — CVS Health — while simultaneous instituting the removal of tobacco product from all national CVS retail stores.
