Ready to get schooled? Alright, let's go!

The Big One

The University of Virginia community is protesting the treatment of third-year student Martese Johnson who received 10 stitches after he was allegedly brutalized by officers with Virginia's Alcoholic Beverage Control division on Wednesday. The bloody incident took place after Johnson was denied entry to a local college bar off campus.

The controversial arrest of Johnson has reinvigorated concern about how law enforcement treat black people. The incident has also revived a debate over whether agents with Virginia ABC should be responsible for addressing underage drinking on the state's college campuses, especially at UVa.

There's an argument to be made that ABC officials should focus on law enforcement functions that only they can handle, like auditing the books of restaurants to determine whether they're abiding by the law or not. Why should ABC agents be policing city streets when local police are better equipped and trained to deal with arrests? ABC should focus on what it knows how to do best: Enforce violations committed by alcohol licensees.

Making Moves

A former Naval Academy commandant was named Wesley College president. Robert E. Clark II will serve as the school's 17th president starting July 15.

George Mason University is now offering a cybersecurity engineering degree. The Volgenau School of Engineering worked with top cybersecurity leaders like Michael Papay, vice president and chief information officer of Northrop Grumman Corp., to develop the program. According to Papay, the country's future depends on innovative cybersecurity experts and "George Mason gets it."

A startup launched by co-founder of 2U Jeremy Johnson has received 10,000 applications in less than six months from aspiring coders. Andela hasn't been operating for long, but interest is high.

"The company was founded on the idea that brilliance and talent is evenly distributed around the world, but opportunity is not," said Adam Frankel, former Obama speechwriter turned vice president of external affairs for Andela, in an interview with DC Inno. "That's the premise for what we're doing and what we're working to address: Linking brilliance and opportunity."

American University was added to the list of 104 schools currently under Title IX investigation. AU joins 11 other D.C.-area colleges and universities accused of mishandling sexual violence reports.
