A New Bullet That Could Have Saved Michael Brown's Life?

Poway, Ca.-based Alternative Ballistics is a quickly growing startup that develops technology for law enforcement and military agencies — among recent, high profile customers is the Ferguson, Mo. police department. The security startup has received national recognition as CNN, CBS and local Fox affiliates have interviewed CEO Christian Ellis about his company’s leading product, The Alternative.

The Alternative was developed as a blunt force impact device to fill the void in lethal force situations, which currently holds limited options.

2014 may be remembered as a year of civil protest and unrest.

The shootings of individuals like Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Tamir Rice by police officers/security forces, captivated headlines around the country while sparking a great debate regarding a police officer’s requirement for using lethal force.

The Alternative is a step in the right direction because it provides a new nonlethal force option which may have been preferred but previously unavailable. The product is designed to be placed onto the top of the weapon within a second. Most importantly, this can be accomplished without the danger created by an officer removing his or her eyes and weapon from a potential threat. Once the weapon is fired; the bullet embeds itself inside The Alternative — with no chance of escaping — simultaneously transferring the bullet’s energy, propelling it directly at the target.

Here’s how it works:
