UMD Wants to Know: Do You Have What it Takes to Impress Kevin Plank?

We are fortunate enough to live in an area known for its wide array of business competitions, catering to the startup crowd itching for some funding help. It's the contests that have a lasting impact on new ventures, though, that are invaluable resources for bootstrapping founders interested not only in money, but mentorship, support, and reliable relationships that could lead to potential investors as well. That's where University of Maryland's Cupid's Cup business competition comes in.

Hosted by the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship each year, students and young alumni scramble to get their applications in on time for a chance at $115K, access to Under Armour Founder and CEO Kevin Plank's professional network, in-kind services from strategic providers, and the all too beautiful Cupid's Cup. Plank will be partnering with UMD's Robert H. Smith School of Business for the ninth year to launch Cupid's Cup yet again, a whirlwind journey that gives fledgling startups a chance at the big time. He's on the search for the nation's most passionate student entrepreneurs, posing the question: Do you have what it takes?

Earth Starter LLC – which was started by two UMD alums Phil Weiner and John Randal-Gorby – came in first place last year. Their hard work paid off on April 5th and they have continued to find success since winning the Cupid's Cup business competition. The duo started off as Calc II classmates and have developed into full-fledged founders of one transformative startup with amazing potential. They created Nourishmat – which mimics the traditional garden blanket, but is equipped with a plentiful supply of advantageous features that makes gardening an easy task for outdoorsy folks and those new to growing veggies, too. It eliminates the need for pesticides, prevents weeds from infringing on your produce, and fosters the growth of healthy food no matter the outdoor conditions.

Applications aren't technically due until January 6, 2014, but it's well worth starting the process right now. After covering the competition last year, I can attest to what a truly engaging and innovative contest Cupid's Cup is for attendees and participants alike. You have the chance to substantiate the validity of your concept with the approval of Plank to boast of and learn from others like you who are also struggling to get their business off the ground.
