Virginia-Based ZoomData Raises 4.1M in Series A Funding

Reston-based data visualization platform, Zoomdata announced last month that it has raised $4.1 million in Series A round of financing. Led by Columbus Nova Technology Partners (CNTP) and three DC area venture capital firms, CIT Gap Funds, Razor's Edge Ventures and B7, Zoomdata is looking to revolutionize the role of business intelligence.

I spoke with Chris McGill, VP of Strategy and Business Development for Zoomdata, to find out what makes their product unique in a very competitive market. He said that Zoomdata's platform provides "data usage in a very human way to people who make important decisions in real time and presents visuals that anyone could use in a mobile world."

Chris, who has a background in media, explained the importance of taking extremely large and complicated data, and condensing the information so that it's "relatable and easy to use". The learning curve for using their platform is pretty simple as well, he said, mentioning that "some technical chops" are needed for setup, but from there it's pretty straightforward and is accessible on an array of devices.

The company plans on expanding its teams across engineering, marketing, operations and sales, while opening a location in Silicon Valley. Zoomdata will still keep their DMV roots intact, though, as Chris said that the local community has been "extremely supportive" of the 10-month-old startup. Three of the participating firms that helped raised the round of funding are based in the greater D.C. area.

Some things to look forward to in the future: Zoomdata plans on making their platform fully cloud based which will make integration of their software even easier.
