The Superman of Food Startups is Donating Meals to Children in Need

Last we talked to Earth Starter, a local startup bent on making a world where consumers are the producers of their own food. Then they were in the midst of launching their very first Kickstarter to raise money for the manufacturing of their flagship product in the U.S. Earth Starter's mission to cultivate the next generation of gardeners has since expanded to incorporate a new socially responsible and charitable outreach aspect to their already community-oriented business. Earth Starter is donating four meals to children in need for every Nourishmat purchased.

Earth Starter has combined forces with Two Degrees, Inc., the first buy-one give-one food company, utilizing Two Degrees' already existent partnership with Feeding America to provide nourishment for hungry kids. Their sophisticated version of the garden mat currently sold on their website and Kickstarter are more than just fun gardening staples, they could also make a difference in a undernourished child's life.

A company founded by two University of Maryland alums, Earth Starter is invested in the belief that anyone and everyone can be a producer of their own meals, even lawyers, politicians, and startup whizzes.

The Nourishmat, for instance, may appear like your average, run-of-the-mill garden blanket, when in reality it's a sustainable garden ecosystem that allows even those with little to no experience, a tight schedule, and limited space the opportunity to simply grow their own food. Each mat is created to ensure an easy, fun, and successful experience for any well established or first-time gardener. So weeds and unpredictable outdoor conditions are no longer a problem.

This isn't the first time Earth Starter has sought to help out children. The local startup has been working with schools to provide the backyard garden starter as a way to teach students how to grow their own vegetables, herbs, and flowers. According to Phil Weiner, CEO of Earth Starter, the company also intends on creating and implementing a "Nourishmat garden based education curriculum" that can be used on school grounds to create food security solutions for urban locales and kids alike.

This is even more of an incentive for individuals to back Earth Starter's Kickstarter that ends on Wednesday, July 31. You purchase a Nourishmat to grow your own food, support a local startup on Kickstarter, and can also feel good about lending a hand to feed children in need. How could you say no to that?
